How does some group lose their concession?
Reading on another thread where someone was asking if a certain outfitter lost their concession, made me wonder how they could.
Would it be by being overbid and thereby being losing that block or by acts the gov. didn't like? Either or both?
If an operator were to lose a concession is that necessarily a bad thing?

SaeedI think concessions are rented for a certain period of time.
Once that period is over, it is put up for auction again, and whoever pays the highest price wins.
That is the way it was in Zimbabwe.
In Tanzania, I understand there is quite a bit of hanky panky goes on to get a concession.

Hunter54There should be a filter that includes conservation efforts for the concession- only those outfitters willing to actively manage the wildlife and increase wildlife diversity and numbers should be allowed to operate the concession.
Further, by placing it in the hands of the highest bidder, some outfitters try to get their money's worth by over-harvesting the game or over-booking hunts.

And we should all join hands and sing Ku-bye-ah.
"There should be" simply doesn't fly in Africa. In the third world it is money that does the talking.
The way to ensure that operators take care of their concessions is to give them long term, renewable leases.
As far as: "only those outfitters willing to actively manage the wildlife and increase wildlife diversity and numbers should be allowed to operate the concession." who would be in charge of oversight? It is pretty easy to pay-off a guy who is making $250 a month....

Adrian ParhamThe most effective way to lose a concession is to fall into political disfavor!
