Freight bill for trophies
I finally got notification from Maple Freight & World Wild Logistics. $2793.79 Freight collect or less 5% prepaid. This is from Bulawayo, Zim to Chicago. This includes $250.oo to Maple (assume to truck to J'berg and 2% gov't levy of $250.00, based on what I am not sure.
This is for two crates. Actual wt. of 179 kilos and 303 kilos chargeable on each.
Further, they are proposing to use Coppersmith in Chicago.

How do those charges compare to what some of you have paid on similar chargeable weights? No routing is shown.

$62.81 of the total is for insurance to Chicago in the amount $16,750.49. For that coverage I wouldn't care if they fell in the ocean!
(Approximately 80# of ivory, kudu mount and waterbuck mount, zebra rug and surplus skin.)

Are their other brokers you can recommend in Chicago?

Thanks,

This figure is within $150 of what I paid Hecny Int. last year for 2 sets of tusks. Weight of tusks, stands, zebra rug, crating was supposedly also about 300 kg. That seemed high to me then, still does.

I expect my trophies to ship soon from Bulawayo and will probably use Maple freight fot the sea option. Are yours coming by sea or by air?

I got my stuff from Tanz and it was under 2K; I think around 1600, but I can't remember. It was two buff, a sable, waterbuck, two reedbuck, topi, civet, and backskins from everything.

AfricanHunter,

Have you considered using the Ocean Cargo scheme through Fauna and Flora/ Safari Cargo Systems? If not you can email John Meehan or call him at 718-977-7700.

I saved considerable money by using this service instead of Air Cargo.

I am curious why your shipment is in two crates with only 80# tusks, two mounts and a few skins [unless they are full body mounts of course!] Shouldn't weigh that much - maybe 200lbs? Surely not 1060lbs. Though maybe those are "volumetric weights"?

Anyway, I recommend, Fauna and Flora if they can help you out.

I asked for a quote each way. This quote is for air. I was advised this AM they would get a sea quote as I had previously asked.

Link to John didn't work, I'll have to call him.
I am wondering why two crates also. The Kudu and waterbuck are shoulder mounts.

As I mentioned in another post I had asked for a sea quote as well and didn't get it. It is susposed to be forthcoming.

Weights are volumatic or chargeable.

Just for inormation to you all, I got the quotes side-by-side finally. Here are the results delivery to NE:
air to Chicago=$2793.79, Coppermith=$442.00, truck delivery $573.70
sea to New York=$819.00, Fuana and Flora with truck from NY to NE= 992.00.
It addsup to a little less than 50% by sea. I am sure there will be some delay in getting afull container for the ship, but for that kind of money difference I can wait. After all, I have been waiting. We'll see how it goes.
