Ross, it may be a larger issue exporting them from the USA to use over there even if the governments do allow them.

They are allowed in SA, for sure. The people we hunt with have both thermal and night vision scopes and monoculars…bought them in the US at the shows and just put them in their luggage, no problem. However; might be different for a US citizen that would put it on a 4457 to avoid issues on return, might run into problems with ITAR/EAR. But, might not, too.

Allowed in Zim as well.

Not allowed to export them. Roll the dice if u want. I'm not.

If you take them and bring them back…that is not exporting.

Like you I thought the same and didn't believe anyone at the gun shop. I spoke directly with the manufacturer (couldn't tell you which one I have) before I went to Zim last year. Right or wrong, export is simply taking them out of the country, which would require a permit even if just for hunting and returning home with them.

Absolutely legal in SA, buy them over the counter. The US export rules are simply ridiculous.

I have checked into it a bit. I was told exporting was defined as taking it and not bringing it back.

I am not sure what to believe or if there are definitive rules.

This would be funny if it weren’t true.
