Form 4457
I am borrowing a friend's rifle for my upcoming hunt in Zambia. He already has a Form 4457 in his name from his last hunt, but will not be coming with me on this hunt. Do I have to get a new one in my name? Or can I just use his form? Any insight into this would be appreciated.

Yes, it shows your ownership (I guess loan) and the document would need to match your ID.

CDub:

The rifle will be in your possession so you will need the 4457 in your name. I loaned a rifle this year to a friend going to RSA and we went to the local ICE office and got the 4457 in his name. No problem.

I also vote for getting a new 4457 with your name and address on it.

Last week at ATL, they were checking passports and serial numbers against the 4457s.

Interestingly, that was the FIRST time I've ever had mine checked in 10 trips.

Do what I did in order to transport my friend's rifle for him: buy it for a dollar, then sell it back for same after the hunt. Then you can say in all honesty that it is your property. (Your friend's going to have to trust you, otherwise you'll have made a pretty good deal!)

safari-lawyer,

Did they record the serial numbers?

If they did, it was not apparent to me.

Our passports and 4457s were in a clear envelope that remained in my possession. I laid the envelope on the table as well as both rifles, removed from the cases. The agent picked up the passport and 4457, checked my name and handed the passport back to me. He then examined the rifles to compare the serial nos to the 4457.

If there was some way to record the numbers it escaped me. Of course, this was done in the minutes following 30 hours of travel. Might there have been a detail that escaped me? Maybe. However, I do not think the numbers were recorded.

just take it to your local customs agent and he will look at your ID the # on the gun and issue you the form no problems. The guns are not registered unless perhaps you live in the socialist republic of California
