World Record Waterbuck?

Eland SlayerWorld Record Waterbuck?
I came across this photo and almost cannot believe it. This is the most insanely massive Waterbuck I've ever seen....to the point where it almost looks fake. If it is real, then it is truly an amazing animal.
I wonder if it had something wrong with it, which might make it grow horns like this?

jdollargotta be some sort of genetic freak. since it seems to have been hunted on a SA game farm, i have to believe the land owners new he was there.

Jason PYes, it is a world record.
I have hunted there.
Looking forward to my next trip in 2 weeks.
I agree with jerry..this just does not look natural...they had to have been taking care of him since he was a calf and waiting for the right fee.

crbutlerIts big... but not that big. About an inch and a half bigger than number 2, and Roy Vincent guided a guy in Zim to one that was only about 5" smaller (back in '87)
According to the SCI book 33+ on the larger side with 14" diameter(ed circumference actually) horn on the opposite side.
I think the angle of that picture makes it look more freakish than a more normal photo would.
A huge waterbuck, no doubt. As I recall, this one one of the SCI all Africa awards a year or two back.
Was it taken on a game farm, I suppose so. Is it out of the realms of possibility for a natural animal? I don't know, but from some in the book from areas that are wild, I would think it possible...

Jason PBy all means contact the Outfitter or do some research on the Gentleman who harvested this animal, and this hunt. The hunter is retired Military and did not pay some massive fee to harvest this animal.
If memory serves me, the ranch is about 30k acres.
I took my kudu, bushbuck, nyala, and a few other plains game animals from this very concession.

I'm glad to hear it!! It is certainly an incredible Waterbuck!! I just didn't realize it was possible for them to have mass like that.

Jason PNeither did I!
I asked the Outfitter if he had seen the bull before it was shot. If memory serves me correct, he had not. However, his uncle (I believe) had seen it before and had told him about.
The concession was/is leased. It had not been hunted much (maybe a year) before it was shot.
Before it was leased, there was little to no hunting at this concession.
Much of the ranch is very thick and visibility is limited. I believe this bull was taken at a water hole, right before dusk (but I am not 100% certain).
I will be hunting this concession in two weeks, along with my wife, 3 sons, father, and good friend. With exception to me and my wife, it will be everyone's first trip to Africa.
I will take a lot of pics of the concession/area and post them here. To say we are looking forward to the trip is an understatement
