What about a 416 Remington with 350 gr TSX bullets? About 2600 FPS would provide equivilent trajectory of a 375 H&H; Enough UMPH for 95% of buffalo shots; That tough bullet would probably not tear up the small stuff.
Have not made my first trip to Africa; but perhaps makes a bit of sense.
400 gr solids for everything else.

Idaho Sharpshooter416 Rigby for one rifle for everything in the world. Perhaps the quotes about "too big" or "needs an expensive magnum action" have been put to rest with the advent of the $999.95 CZ550.
The Rigby is a true stopper. The reason I know is because my PH carried one! Besides, I can always load DOWN to 375H&H power levels with a 350gr bullet.

I'm taking my 416 to Zim as a back up rifle for that very reason when I head over in August...
If all my ammo winds up gone I know he'll have some Rigby ammo I can use...
I've been shooting my Rigby allot lately and have to admit it is pretty hard to beat as an all around cart the more I think about it...
Fits nicely between the 375 & the various 458s...
All the trajectory you could need with plenty of punch and not too much recoil...

It already exists; it’s called the .40 Newton and was designed in the 1913-1915 era.
The .375 Ruger/.416 Ruger brass is a perfect match for all .30 Newton derivative cartridges; case requires shortening from 2.568” to min 2.515”/max 2.520” OAL, then run through the full length resizing die and you’ll have the perfect match to a Newton factory drawn cartridge case.
It seems one Model 1916, First Model, Newton rifle was produced in late 1919/early 1920 with the originally designed .400” bore/.408” groove segmental rifled barrel. Newton named his cartridges after the bore diameter vis-à-vis the US norm of groove diameter hence the name .40 Newton. Sure would love to have that puppy but doubt I could afford it!
And another 1-4 Model 1924, Second Model, Newton rifles (aka: Buffalo Newton rifle) were produced sometime between 1926-1929 using sleeved barrels with .403” bore/.411” groove square cut rifling designed for use in .405 Winchesters.
So take your pick or go with the Brit style barrel with a .400” bore/.411” groove barrel which would most likely match your .400 Jeffery.
Though originally factory rifle cartridges, as Newton died in 1932 and his last factory closed that same year, all Newton cartridges now typically fall within the wildcat cartridge lineup.
Correctly headstamped brass for the .40 Newton is occasionally available from Quality Cartridge. Or roll your own using the Ruger brass.

lb404How could any cartridge less than 30 years old in overall use be even considered in the discussion. Really! We are talking about taking game in amounts and variety never to be repeated in the rest of African Hunting History. I cant believe anyone can include the unproven Ruger stuff at all.

The top three
.375H&H, .404 Jeffery, and the .470 NE.
If I had to pick just one it is a major toss up between the .404 and the .375. And it really depends on the terrain and area that I am hunting in. In some areas it is definitely a .470 inn a double in others a scoped .375H&H. A well set up .404 takes the place of both. Ok it's the .404 ....Today!

Karamojo BillI have no experience there YET..(only 158 days!!!!!) But the .416 Rigby was good enough for Harry Selby. It's good enough for me.
Also my gunsmith agrees. He tells a story of his buddy shooting a buff w/ .375 H&H (solid hit) and it charged. It was flattened by him with the .416 Rigby just as it hooked the .375 shooter.

When the 416 was returned to him, he kept using the 458.
So don't say that the 416 was good enough for Harry Selby. Not when he went on to use a 458 Win instead.

doccashI'll vote for the .416 Rigby.I do think reduced pressure is important, juut like iron sites and wood(pretty) stocks!

465H&HIt depends on what criteria you use to rate them. If it is what has been the most often used caliber for all around use over the last 100 years then it has to be the 9.3X62. If it is the currrently available caliber that is most useful for the greatest range of african animals, then i would pick the 375 H&H.

Bwana NderoboI have ALWAYS loved my 375 H&H, albeit in a push feed Model 70, it has always killed what I hit in the right place with it. That said, my 416 Rem in a CRF Model 70 is my favorite "Big Stick". For a light rifle my 300 H&H followed closely by the 300 Win Mag! I really dont care, as along as my feet touch African Soil!!!
