Biggest one the Ph ever seen
Any of you ever notice, on hunting articles that always says "It was the biggest the PH ever seen" or it was the biggest one of that year" on what ever the client gets, weather it be a buffalo, Leopard, Lion,KUDU, Eland, ect. Are PH's just pulling there clients leg?, or do the animals keep getting bigger and better?

After years and years of commercial safari hunting, Africa continues to yield amazing and record breaking trophies with every new safari season (think of the amazing run of Mtn. Nyala coming out of Ethiopia). Many of the "biggest I've ever seen" are just that. Some may be BS, but many are genuine whoppers. It does not seem (I have no data) that new top ten record heads occur with the same regularity in NA, SA, Europe, Asia, or the S. Pacific. It may be that this is a product of the diversity of species in Africa or the number of days spent afield, but it seems like Africa produces more record breaking trophies each year than anywhere else.

A time-proven way to get the client smiling and in the tipping mood.

I think of it as just another hunting tradition.

Silly boy, they have to memorize that line for the PH exam.

I must be behind the curve because no PH has ever said that to except for one that was talking about my ego! dancing

As a test you could refuse to shoot it; if the PH bonks you on the head and shoots it with your rifle and then you find yourself waking up in a posed trophy shot then you can rest assured it really was the biggest he's seen...

Never shot one of those. But I'd sure like to some day. Cool

Never thought about it much, but now I can remember several times when someone said "biggest I've ever seen (in this area)". Each time, I think it was when I was trying to decide if I wanted to shoot it or not. Must admit, every time they were pretty big.

You need to remember the 'fuck factor'

When the first word out of a PHs mouth when he sees an animal is 'FUCK' or similar, it means he's just spotted something very special indeed.

DDRHOOK/Hooker knows all about the 'fuck factor' Wink

The "fuck factor" is a sure indicator as is the PH shouting to a 2x1 group..."WHO WANTS AN XXXX!" repeatedly over 10 seconds before you can load the rifles.

I think if you've done enough research to know what makes a big trophy of a certain species you'll know if the PH is pulling your chain. A client probably owes that to himself. I also think in most cases if you book with truly reputable operators you won't run into a BSing PH. A good PH does not have to act more enthusiastic than he is about a trophy because he's enjoying the process about as much as the client and after all he probably recommended shooting that animal.

You should know the trophy potential in the area you are hunting based on your pre hunt research.

One of the few times I heard it was after I shot this Nigerian Bohor Reedbuck. The PH grabbed a tape, measured it twice, and produced a SCI record book when we returned to camp. He showed me that it would have been 6 or 7 in the SCI book. He wasn't BSing.

After all the fuss, I never entered it.

Well, my favorite is "fantastic shot"; pure horse shit. When my ph tells me that I just look at him and shake my head, cause I know it was not!

I think a lot of hunters NEED to hear that, and the PH's know who THEY are. For some, Africa is an ego trip rather than a hunting trip.
