Are you ready for your safari?

1. Is your passport valid for at least 6 months after your scheduled return?

2. Do you have at least 4 blank visa pages in your passport?

3. Have your started your vaccinations? Some vaccinations require multiple doses with certain time periods between each dose. Try your county or city health clinic, as they may be cheaper than your doctor.

4. How is that diet and exercise program coming along?

5. If you want to take some gifts for the camp staff, not too early to pick up a few things on sale. I usually watch for Walmart to put their gloves and stocking caps on sale. The least expensive I have found baseball caps are when ordered on the internet. If you want, you might contact your PH now (while he is not out hunting) and see if he needs you to bring him anything.

6. How is the shooting practice coming along? Have you got enough ammo? Sometimes, I find it difficult to find factory ammo in solids, so plan ahead.

7. Are your boots broken-in and comfortable?

8. Have you been practicing with your camera? Nothing worse than coming home with lousy safari photos.

9. Check the Tips & Packing List for other suggestions.

10. Have you registered your firearms with Customs (Form 4457)?

11. Have you started saving for your next safari?

12. If you are headed to Tanzania, don't forget the need for the Yellow Fever vaccination and the need to acquire an entry Visa in advance.

Wondering why one's passport must be valid for at least 6 months after you return from Africa? I am going to Tanzania the latter part of August and my passport expires in Feb. 2007. Right at the 6 months. Should I re-apply? Damn good post. I don't think that it was ever mentioned that I needed a yellow fever vaccination when I booked. They did inform me about the Visa. Any idea as to when to apply for the Visa?

Not all countries require the six month validity. Tanzania DOES.

TANZANIA - *Passport and visa required. Single- and multiple-entry tourist visas are valid for 3 months. Tourist visa requires 1 application with a valid passport (minimum six months validity), 1 recent passport sized photo, $50 fee for six months single entry, and $60 for 3 months multiple entry. Business visa, for a stay of up to 2 months, requires 1 application form, 1 photo, and $200 fee (no personal checks). Business visa requires invitation letter from Tanzanian company. All visas require proof of sufficient funds and proof of onward/return ticket. Check with your travel agent, as they sometimes have a service that can get your visa for you (at a price).



Passport Renewal



Yellow Fever vaccination is not required for entry into Tanzania. However, Tanzania is listed as an Endemic Yellow Fever Zone, therefore you may be required to prove vaccination before entry into another country - when traveling from a country where Yellow Fever is endemic (Tanzania being one of those countries).

Your suggestions are spot on. I do have one question and haven't been able to find the answer as of yet.

I have "heard" that beginning in 2007 or maybe 2008, a valid US passport will be required for all airline travel, even within the US. This will be the standard for "proper" identification and required of all air travelers. Do you have any information on this?

This is probably what you have heard. I don't think a passport will be required for air travel inside the US.


What is the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative?

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will require all travelers, including U.S. citizens, to and from the Americas, the Caribbean, and Bermuda to have a passport or other accepted document that establishes the bearer’s identity and nationality to enter or re-enter the United States. This is a change from prior travel requirements. The goal is to strengthen border security and facilitate entry into the United States for U.S. citizens and legitimate foreign visitors.

Who will the Travel Initiative affect?

The travel document initiative will affect all United States citizens traveling within the Western Hemisphere, who will now be required to carry a passport or other accepted document.

It will also affect certain foreign nationals who currently are not required to present a passport to travel to the United States namely most Canadian citizens, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda and Mexican citizens.

When will the Travel Initiative be implemented?

In the proposed implementation plan, which is subject to a period of initial public comment, the Initiative will be rolled out in phases, providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines. The proposed timeline will be as follows:

December 31, 2006 – Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.

December 31, 2007 – Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.

FYI Mozambique required a VISA as well. The same process as Tanzania.
