Why I'm not hunting Africa this year.

FjoldWhy I'm not hunting Africa this year.
I just got home from the hospital after having my left knee replaced. The surgery finished up at 3:30 in the afternoon and I walked to the bathroom at 6 PM. My doctor was happy because he cut along a 13" scar that I had from a previous surgery so he had a lot of room to work in without worrying about how it looked.
They gave me Percocet right after the surgery and I haven't needed any pain meds since. It actually hurts less now than before I had the operation.

BiebsFrank, make sure you follow the rehab to the T. Some folks wimp out, and wind up with restricted movement for the rest of their days.

drwesI hope the recovery is quick and trouble free,, and the therapy is just exercise to get ready for your next safari!!

mstewart44As a PT who sees this surgery all the time, I will echo what has already been said: don't skimp on the rehab! You have about 8 weeks to get your motion back. After that, your motion will be whatever you got. Good luck! Take your pain meds before the therapy sessions.

AntlersFrank, from experience with long rehabs on knees and shoulders I agree with those that encourage faithfullness to therapy. I used my safari last year as my motivation to rehab sugery on my shooting shoulder - it worked for me. I pray you'll recover quickly and completely.

470EDDYME TOO!!...no replacement, only reattachment of my tendon in the knee snapped in a fall(in southern India on a cruise of all places!!)...which was result of severe stenosis in my back, pinching nerves that control my upper leg muscles...the Doc's DIDN'T find until the physical therapists-restoring the knee popped out a disc!! So, NOW I have two incisions, and maybe together have you beat for inches!!
Cheers

ShackI love the way they draw those marks on the side to remind them where to work on. I've had my share of those too.
At this point, I've got all these after market parts, but am missing a bunch of the manufacturer's original equipment.
Anyway, I've a friend who had both knees done at the same time. It was kinda tough for a while. But he's doing great now. Walks better than I do.
Get well soon.

Aspen Hill AdventuresGood luck Frank! Looks like you don't have much swelling at all. Mine blew up both times and it was very painful each time.

boondoggleTake your meds before PT otherwise you'll discover the origin of the phrase "no pain, no gain".
You won't regret the decision; I didn't with either of my knee replacements.... except for the guaranteed groping by the TSA every time you fly in the US.

fvh40Frank, I wish you a speedy recovery.
I'm now 10 weeks past surgery and looking forward to my next hunt in mid SEP withn a group of Swedish guys.
I only had a PCL replacement though.

MacD37Frank, my family has done a lot of motocross racing, so you know we have some experience with knees and verious broken bones. My youngest son (47 yrs old) is going to have both knees replaced in a couple years. As everyone says the re-hab is very valuable thing if done properly! Stick with it, and get back in the field! Get well Hoss!

Dead EyeHere's wishing a speedy reocvery. My Dad had both knees replaced within a year and he wishes he would have done it sooner. Im sure it will improve your hunting, not to mention your life.

Tim Ferrallnless you want to walk like a pirate for the rest of your life. You should be good to go for an active Christmastime hunt somewhere Best of luck.

Tim FerrallFrank,
MY first post got e-obliterated, but I've had both knees done in the last 2 years. No more pain. Stay active, keep your weight down and DO THE THERAPY. Hell yes it hurts, but it hurt before the surgery. Full extension is the most important...unless you want to walk like a pirate the rest of your life! You should be ready for an active hunt by Christmas. Best of luck!

FjoldThanks guys (and gal)

This is operation number eight on this knee so I know the value of the physical therapy. I haven't taken a pain pill since I left the hospital, I'm saving them up for the PT!
Ann, I have to use the full body scanner at airports as there's no way to pass the metal detectors with all the hardware left in me from all the surgeries.
