Anyone hunt buffalo with Luke Samaras?
If so what was your experience?

A friend of mine hunted buffalo with him last November and had nothing but good to say about the experience. He and his father both took whopper 42" plus buffalo. Luke's Masailand concession has great buffalo, especially late in the season.

He has a very good reputation, and is a very capable hunter..He has had the same concession for a number of years..I would give him 5 stars, based on the many hunters I know that have hunted with him...

shootaway,

I hunted buffalo on Luke's Simanjiro concession in Masailand in late October 2005. I hunted out of the Kitangare camp with Professional Hunter Nigel Theisen. Like Ray, I would rate the operation there as exceptional. It is first rate in every way.

During the dry times though, the hunter shouldn't expect to see large herds of buffalo, or other game for that matter. Most of the animals migrate to Tarangeri National Park where there is permanent water. There are still ample numbers of animals though, to be sure. The biggest herd I saw in seven hunting days was perhaps twenty animals. Usually we found the buffalo two or three animals at a time.

If I were to go back and hunt there again for buffalo, I'd try to go on the last hunt of the season or shortly before. You will see large concentrations of buffalo and other game then. That's the good news. The bad news is that the really big bulls will usually be found in the middle of the herd and very difficult to get to.

It's a great area and Luke runs a first-class operation.

Came back from Selous 3 weeks ago. I did not hunt with Luke Samaras himself but with one of his PH (Paddi "Blood"). Excellent company, great food, service, PH, trackers, camp etc. I shot a nice old buffalo. We saw Buffalo, elephant, Leopard, Lion. Plains game was difficult because of too much water (animals spread). I loved Selous, very remote, did not meet any other hunters. I was told by our PH that chances of a very big buffalo are better in Masailand but the area is supposed to be more crowded with hunters.

If going to Selous you should pick Namkongo Camp for the best hunting. Take the lake camp for better food and view of lake. We paid "old" trophy fees but with a risk of paying up if Tanzania government sticks with current plan.

I've booked for Luke since 1999 with excellent results. He runs a first class operation.
