Bill CWhat a great looking buffalo, and boss! It would nice if the taxidermist could "retain" (replicate) the coloring versus making them the traditional black.
And an 8x10 hanging in the living room should do nicely until your pedestal is done!

AtkinsonThat is a beatiful bull, it just goes to show that Buffalo like Mule Deer cannot be judged on spread alone..I know of many 45 inch plus Buffalo that are inferior trophies IMO because one would have to shave the hair off the boss and plaster up the boss to make them decent for mounting!! Even shot a few of those myself, but never thought they were worth a taxidermy bill..I think many folks are only concerned with spread, I talk to a lot of people on a daily bases and thats the first question they ask, can I get a 45 inch buffalo, I usually say probably not but a good 38 inch bull with good bosses is a nice representive trophy...They ask me where they can get a guarenteed 45 incher and I refer them to AR...The internet is full of big bulls like that, and 30 inch Mule Deer are a dime a dozen!

Widowmaker416One more thing, I'm doing the buff in a pedastal mount, broadside with his head turned hard to one side. just as he was when I took him. I need to do some major modifing to the form but it will be worth it. (a supply house makes a form like that but it's turned the wrong way, wouldn't you know!). Everytime I look at the mount I'll remember him standing there staring me down. Now I know why hunters go back to Africa time and time again just for buffalo!
When I get it done I'll post photo's. My mounts always take forever to do, you know, the shoemaker always has holes in his shoes!
My safari in 2005, I plan to shoot a good old cow to go along with him in my living room.

I am the taxidermist! And the shooter! I have to agree with you, I don't like the "painted black" look. I did a mount for a client last summer, didn't paint it black, left the underside tan color and air brushed the "hair" brown. I'll have to find a photo of that and post it, it looked great.

I turned down a 40 inch + on the third day of my safari, it was ugly, no bosses, no curl. Just wide.
Yes, everybodys first question to me was, "How wide was he?"
I didn't care about spread, I just wanted a nice old buffalo, the outfit I hunted with are very serious about only taking "Hard horn" bulls. We did a lot of tracking only to come up on soft boss bulls, but I didn't mind, it was very exciting, the tracking and the stalks. Need to do it again!!

Just received my African Hunter magazine in the mail today. Your article is in there, but I have not read it yet.
I have been to Africa twice. Shot a great 41 inch bull with a great hard boss on the first trip. Shot him out of a herd on the 4th day after some very hard hunting.
On my 2nd trip, I shot a 36" bull with a very hard boss on the 3rd day. My 2nd bull was one of two dagga boys that we tracked for hours in very thick brush. I put a bullet (416 Rigby, 400 grain Barnes X @ 2,400 fps) through his heart at less than 25 yards. At the shot, he came for us. PH shot as I was reloading and knocked him down at approx. 15 to 20 yards. I quickly put a 3rd shot into him to keep him down for good.
Both bulls are great, however, I think my 36 inch buff may be a better trophy to me personally based upon the hunt. Can't complain either way.
Here is a photo of buff number 1.
I'll try to post a photo of buff number 2 later on.
Anyway, glad to hear you had a great hunt and glad to see the great trophy you have to show for it

That's an allsome buffalo! Yes I have to agree with you, it's the hunt, nothing can ever come close to moving through that thick brush hoping you see him first. You took some great trophies, be proud of them, I hope to take a second one this next safari. Good job!
So my story is in the African Hunter magazine, I can't wait to get my copy, I think New jersey is the last state to get a delivery.
