rxgremlinNamibian "Own Use" Permits
I was speaking to someone from Namibia today about non exportable animals on "own use" permits. We were specifically talking about elephant, hippo and buffalo in the Caprivi. I had never heard of such permits and wanted to ask the local experts what the legality of these permits are for foreign hunters.

jdollarso far i have shot elephant, buff and hippo on "own use" permits in the Caprivi- no problems at all. nothing is exportable and ivory goes to the government. buff and hippo skulls go to the conservancy where you hunt. all perfectly legal.
Took an elephant with one in the Caprivi, no problems and completely legal.

rxgremlinThanks for the answers. Anyone has recommendations for outfitters for dangerous game in the Caprivi?

Bama15Hunted an elephant this past Aug. with an own use permit. It is an elephant hunt at almost half the cost. You hunt for an old bull that has broken tusk or bad genes. I shot my bull out of a grope of nine bulls in a thorn thicket with my grandson twenty yards behind me. Now that is exciting. I would recommend Jamy Traut. I did a report on it here. Non-trophy bull hunt with Jamy Traut posted Aug.12. I have another "own use" ele hunt scheduled next year. I can't afford trophy bull hunts so that is how I hunt ele.

Wendell ReichIt's legit. Benefit is that it is a cheaper hunt than an exportable trophy.

Aaron NeilsonRX - If you want to email me, I can send you the exact / legal wording on the O/U hunts. Everything is totally legal.
I book several of these hunts each year in the Caprivi for clients, and I just booked my own personal O/U hunt for ele/buff in 2015. A great way to experience DG hunting, at a more reasonable price - if you are not too concerned about getting the trophy home.
