I have heard from a few people that it�s problem with the 460 G&A becourse the small shoulder. I don�t know what they mean about this. Anyone here who knows and like to explain (if there is any problem).

The small shoulder in the .460 G&A is the difference in size from the shoulder dimension to the neck dimension after the .404 Jeffery parent case is necked up to hold .458" bullets. The shoulder must provide the stop for the case in the chamber to maintain positive headspace control.

The careful handloader can overcome the potential problem.

The factories don't want to build rifles or sell ammunition in this caliber because they judged that the tolerances in the manufacturing processes for rifle chambers combined with the ammunition tolerances would not provide positive headspace control. People can argue about it all they want, but the factory engineers know what they can and cannot do.

The Lott cartridge headspaces on the belt, so shoulder size is not a problem for the factories.

The animal is not going to be able to tell the difference between the .458 Lott or the .460 G&A, but lots of words have been written about both of them!

As Jeff Cooper keeps saying, we don't need new cartridges, we do need new and better rifles.

'Been several discussions over in big bores forum about the 460 G&A in the past year or so. Do a search. And look at the old post "Ultimate 458" also, I think it was in Sept or Oct.

460 G&A has a 15 degree shoulder, needs a 25 degree shoulder and a good set of dies for case forming so one does not push the shoulder too far back.

It is a nice cartridge and has all the power and recoil a mortal can handle. Runs at a lower pressure than the Lott at equivalent velocities, which helps out in the extraction department.

460 G&A, 450 Vincent Long, and 458 Ultra are basically the same in performance, just a few differences in case dimensions.

I have built and shot a couple of 460 G&As for other folks...I think all this hoopla is mostly in the minds of the overly tech minded...Kinda like the bunch that thought the 1911 Colt should be double action, the salvation of a problem that never existed in the first place...

I have shot a 458 x 404 improved (460 GA with 25 degree shoulder) for last 24 months no problem with either fire formed (Norma) or necked up cylindrical brass (HDS).

the main advantage of the 25 degree shoulder is if you just neck size the brass from a cylindrical "basic" 404 case it still has a worthwhile shoulder.

I think the 15 degree shoulder would need to be fire formed.

The 450 Ackley has similar velocity and is probably easier to work with for an American shooter, but I enjoy the velocity and pressure range available with the 404 case.

From a 21 inch barrel I am easily getting 2350 fps with 500 gr, 2450 fps with 450 gr and 2650 + with 400 gr. It will do more but this is easily obtained with several powders.
