14-year-old boy from Nzwayibane, Swaziland has been killed by a crocodile He was attacked while swimming in the Mpofu River. His body was only found yesterday morning, missing the left leg, by the police and members of the public who were out searching for him. They had to abandon the search on Saturday because the water level was too high.
Sikhombiso Hlawe was a Grade IV pupil at Mavula Primary School. He is said to have drowned after being attacked by the reptile while swimming with his three friends on Saturday after-noon.
Information gathered is that the deceased, who was a herder in one of the homesteads in the area, was looking after goats when he, along with two friends, decided to cool off in the river.
His guardian, Elias Simelane, said while they were swimming, the crocodile grabbed him. His friends tried to rescue him, but their efforts proved to be futile as the reptile dragged him under.
His friends, according to Simelane, came to report the incident and the community tried to locate his body, but could not as it was getting dark.
He said they then decided to report the matter to Buhleni police.
"In the company of the police and some members of the public we tried to search for his body, but we discovered that the water level was too high and it was already too late," he said.
Simelane said the dead boy was an orphaned and vulnerable child whom he adopted recently and he was paying for his school fees.
