Please ask SCI where they have been in the Battle for Botwswana? Hunting there will effectively be finished in 2013. SCI has been conspiuously absent from Botswana and the hunting community there could have used a hand.

Jeff,
SCI-isn't Jesus, and they can't save countries from their own decisions. I actually attended the ACWF in 2010'...and you can complain all you want about SCI...but no one else is doing anything in Africa or around the world that is benefiting hunters more than SCI.

Having worked in Conservation in Africa for 4 yrs, dealing with Governments/Hunting Associations, SCI, DSC, HSC...you have "ZERO" base for what you're talking about!

Some countries are going to close...whether SCI throws $$$ at it or not!

fujotupu- While I was in grad school, I was the Co-Founder of the African Wildlife Conservation Program: Genetics, Genomics & Health based in the A&M College of Vet Medicine. Read here for more info. (http://vetmed.tamu.edu/africanwildlife)

We worked to start a DNA collections program from Hunter Harvested Trophies, outfitting professional hunters with DNA collection kits in multiple African Countries. I have since finished my education, and are working in a new field, however I still keep in close contact with the Project director (other co-founder) and stay as involved as possible.

We received support from the 3 major safari clubs, SCI, DSC, HSC, and had many participants and advocates in all the of major African PH associations, as well as private citizens and hunting/conservation enthusiasts. At events like AWCF, we met with Government leaders from multiple countries and discussed with them the benefits of hunting/contributing to scientific research.

Great Program. Making blanket statements about SCI not doing enough in one country is pretty ridiculous. I find it amazing, that people especially on AR, turn to throwing stones at SCI...like Bwana Bunduki...where is his complaint about DSC? or HSC? why is it SCI shoulders the blame alone? What about the Botswana Professional Hunters Assoc? In all reality, countries will continue to fold to political pressures and will more than likely move in and out of the huntable status. This is the modern world we live in, and trying to place blame on private organizations for Foreign Governments actions is pointless.

And you can feel free to be as insulting as you like. I pointed out that an entire country has not been helped by SCI. Interestingly enough they chose this country to host their meeting. As far as ZERO base...I guess that depends on your telpathic grasp of my intellect. Of course SCI did make a bumfuzzle of a mess in 2007 when the closure of lion was considered. AS far as MY complaints....No it is the Safari Hunters of Botswana who are losing their livelihood and a way of life. The wildlife suffers.

Far from a blanket statement. It was an accurate depiction of a country losing it's hunting while SCI sat on the side line. As far as DSC, HSUS,HSC,USFWS,NAACP...This thread wasn't about them.

This ACWF sounds very useful. Does anything positive actually come from these conferences?

Mainly a great deal of talking, eating and drinking in up-market hotels - not to mention the free trip to Africa Wink

Bill- I have to disagree, I do believe that it does some good for the area. It is one of the few meeting (if not the only meeting) where leaders of multiple African nations gather to discuss challenges/issues facing hunting/conservation of game. This is certainly an arena that can influence/bring to light new ideas that the decision makers in various departments within these African nations could benefit from.

Bwana-I was in no way trying to insult you, however, one must ask? Have you ever attended a AWCF??? You make the claim, this thread wasn't about DSC, HSC, USFW...etc..it surely wasn't started so you could bash their effort in Botswana. The reason it was hosted in Botswana, is because it's held in the country that volunteers to host it year to year!

I just find it ironic, you can complain about SCI...and leave the other groups out!!! If you're going to paint one red, they should all wear it!

Die Ou Jagter
Oryxhunter1983, you have been around here long enough to know SCI is AR's favorite whippin boy. It appears the PHs in Bots are moving to other countries i e Moz Namabia etc. Wasn't Bots hunting industry built out of the rubble of Kenya. I believe most of the hallowed names in Bots hunting came from Kenya.

Die Ou Jagter- I'm with you! Whipping boy is the exact term! No matter what the organization does, it will always have a "blackeye" here on AR.
