Jorge:

I think you are leaving out a factor. The 2006 rates are no longer in effect. The current rates are the "increased" rates effective back to July 1, 2007. In other words, if you paid the 2006 rates in 2007 and the 2007 rates stick, your trophies won't be shipped until the difference is paid.... or so I understand.

So, the hunters who paid 2006 rates already this year, upon the hope that everything will be rescinded may well have to re-reach into their pockets (or the PH's will or already have done so?) before trophies are allowed out of the country.

My solution is to plan for the worse, and be overjoyed if the gov't comes to its senses and I have a refund.

Ernest: That is EXACTLY what I was trying to convey & confirm. So if one is back already from a hunt in TZ and paid the bill at 06 rates, when it comes time to ship the trophies home he'll have to pay the increase IF the increases stick? jorge

Africa is a funny place. The answer, IMHO, is yes and no. If the license somehow got issued under the old rate, I wonder who the heck would complain, especially after "anti-hassle green poltice" was prn prescribed to the complainer. Secondly, some PH's have agreed that they will take the hit, whatever the outcome (and you've got to salute those guys!). Finally, if you paid the 2006 rate, and your PH is still in the bush, who knows what he'll have to pay when he finally gets back and so makes an attempt.

Sorry, my comment was not intended specifically for, or as a reply to, you in particular.

My comment was meant to underscore that these fee hikes are nothing new. Even the lack of notice is typically Tanzanian - scare tactics are their usual modus operandi.

And mere fee hikes beat the hell out of the flat out bans on hunting that have happened before (in 1973, in Tanz).

Not to mention corruption (from grand to petty solicitation of bribery, and including miscellaneous other larcenies), war, terrorism (e.g., the Mau Mau and the Rhodesian, South African, Namibian and Mozambican bush wars) and other forms of civil unrest up to and including out and out revolution.

In African hunting, you pay your money and you take your chances.

Jorge: To answer your latest question, yes, The PH would have to pay the difference of fees. What I was referring to is that if the 2007 fees remain the same as 2006 fees BUT they go up in 2008, your trophies will not be subjected to further fees even if you only ship your trophies in 2008.

Brett: In 2008 fees will definetely go up! I would hope that they would not go up as currently announced. The Gov, through the Minister, has realised the mistakes in their research with regards game fee comparison with other countries. We believe that TAHOA and their stakeholders will be more involved in the review of 2008 trophy fees and other increases. There are probably 8-10 game fees that require obvious serious review. The rest are acceptable by most.

Larry: Million dollar question! Big Grin I can't tell you what to do with your money. I can say this, there are very good "vibes" that fees will remain unchanged this year i.e. same as 2006 rates. IIRC, you are hunting with RHS? They seem a reputable outfit. Work with them and see if they will allow you to keep the difference in fees on escrow....If my outfitter appeared reasonable in our discussions, i would go in your situation.

No need to explain or "detail". Give me a break. It made perfect sense to me and brought a little levity to a rough topic.
