SevensPics of Battle Scarred Rifles
Does anyone have pics of their PH's rifle or one of their own that has recieved quite a bit of wear and tear over the years? I've always had kind of a soft spot for a rifle that's checkering has been worn flat and bluing dulled after years of heavy use. I thought it would be interesting to showcase some not-so-new rifles.

BiebsIf you contact Adam or Clay at Luxus Walnut, they had Ivan Carter's well-worn Heym 458 (now 450-3 1/4") at the Dallas Show. He is having a Heym 600 NE built on their "Jumbo" action, which was also at Dallas. They might be able to snap a few pix for you.

450/400Ivan's rifle was in the worst "working" condition that I have ever seen. It was in the Heym booth as well.

Then you have never seen Buzz's Ruger in .416 Rigby . . . I am not sure there is any bluing left unless it is under the wood line. The stock has the patena of a well used canoe paddle.

NakihunterWhat about Phil Shoemaker's rifles? The ones I see in Rifle & other Wolfe Publications look like they have been used to dig his garden with!
They just ooooze character, with the duct tape, paint, two-pot glue etc. on them. I just love them!
Any hunting camp in New Zealand will show you lots of such guns. The NZ terrain is so harsh that the stock seems to get dented just as you leave the gun shop!

That AK was in the worst shape I have ever seen. The barrel even looked bent!

BlacktailerDidn't get a picture of it but the game scout who accompanied us in the Selous had a 458Win that looked like it had been subjected to a couple of buffalo stampedes.

Rick RHe's not a PH but once upon a time Saeed posted a picture of one of his rifles leaning against a safari truck. The truck bumper was in better shape than the rifle!

Saeed's two 375/404 rifles are both in great shape. The second one does look a little worse for wear due to paint flaking off of the stock, but other than that its still in great working condition. Especially when you consider its done at least one 21 day safari every year since 1994!

And the full pic...me with my zebra. I thoroughly enjoyed hunting with it. After having seen Saeed's videos since 1996, it was like hunting with a legend!

I was thinking the same thing about your post...
I have seen Gordon's and Ivan's. I can't imagine one with more wear and tear than Ivan's...
I hope someone can post a picture of Ivan's stock. Gouges, not scratches.

GerardThen I know why Ivan's rifle looks the way it does. It is beyond the stage where anyone wants to work on it! I had second thoughts about that 30-06.

This was our game scout in Tanzania. The rifle is a BRNO Mauser 98 in .404 Jeffery. The "sling" is a piece of rope, and it is tied to a hose clamp around the barrel and foreend.

Myles' was fairly "silver" when I was there, although I understand he has a Lott now.

I had the same game scout last year. Luckily he was carrying an SKS instead of the "loose safety catch" AK.

Someone needs to get a pic of Luke Samaras's 416 rigby ( a real honest to gosh Rigby)
I was kind of curious to see it when I heard he was going to be in camp and made an effort to go out to the truck and see it, with visions of all those pretty rigby's I see on the internet.
It was about as worn as these gamescouts AK's , but once again I wasn't smart enough to snap a pic. No blueing/finish @ all that I could see. And I'm sure that rigby would of checkered the gun before they sold it but there wasn't any evidence of that left
In Luke's defense I think he has been working on the wear on it for longer then Buzz/Ivan have been alive!

Wooly ESSSorry boys! I don't do battle scarred rifles. In fact, I usually trade them off when the magazine is empty.

Oz - I KNEW there'd be a picture of that mis-treated 458 in this thread. I've followed him and that damn thing for many miles (and I've lugged his atrocious .416 myself for a few k's also).

BwannaI've seen my share of rifles with real character in Africa, and I respect them. This past fall I was moose and caribou hunting in BC and the guide was carring an old synthetic stocked Ruger with about 10,000 banana stickers on the stock from every banana he'd eaten in the field since he bought the gun. Character like an African ph? No, but an interesting degree of misuse and mistreatment for sure. Sorry, I neglected to take any pictures of it.

I think that is probably the same gun but that pic must be at least 20yrs old!
The gun (and Luke!) both have a lot more wear on them now. I really wish I would of taken a pic of it sitting in the back of his cruiser.

i dont know these guys but i do know that my rifle was at the heym booth ...
