Hunting Rifle Battery for Life.

The combination I like and use is:

.22 LR (BRNO NÂº 2)
7 x 57 Mauser 98
.375 H&H Winchester M 70 Pre-64

From a practical point of view the 7 x 57 should be a .308 Win and a fourth rifle should be a .223 Rem, so my ideal four rifle battery is:

.22 LR
.223 Rem
.308 Win
.375 H&H

Would any of you do it differently now that you are older, presumably more experienced and maybe have hunted the world more?

270 - Light to medium size game in the impala and blesbuck class

300 Win Mag - Heavier stuff like gemsbuck, wildebeest and kudu

375 H&H - From duiker to elephant and everything else in between

tough choice, since 6 hunting guns is max one hunter csn have over her now, if you want a new one , and you are above that limit, you must sel laway untill you are on 5 guns or 4 guns .

But if i were to choose 4 guns , it would have been something like these.

1 . 6mm BR Norma / 6XC, fine match rounds, bench rest rounds , roe deer etc . Scope Zeiss 3-12x56 bdc

2 . 7mm Rem Mag , flatshooting and versatile, combined with another barrel like the 6,5x55 in a Blaser rifle Zeiss scopes, 6-24x56 for long range hunt, and 3-12x56

3. 358 Norma magnum, from 180 to 310 grain bullets, pistol bullets also, and can shape .338 win cases . 3-9x40 scope

.4 . 404 jeffery, from 300 grain to 450 grain, swift and hard . 2.5-8x scope, and 1,5-5x20 for 450 grain bullets

A 12 Ga shotgun is left out as it is necessary for killing many gamebirds. A small rifle such as a 17 HMR or .22 LR is needed for smaller game. A 17 HMR can double as a varmit gun at closer ranges.

The first three long guns to build the foundation of any battery should be the following:

22LR
12ga
30-06

I do not see a more solid foundation than these three in making a long gun battery for all-around hunting.

When adding a fourth long gun, I think the intended purpose would be the driving force. If someone was leaning more towards a varmint/predator centerfire, I'd lean towards a 243 Win as it is broad brushed and can also be used for long range on medium sized game. But, being this is the African Big Game Forum, I'd say the 416 Remington Magnum for the fourth long gun. The 416 Rem would cover all the ground of any 338 or 375 magnum while having more upper end horsepower to better handle dangerous game.

I consider the cartridges below worthy of serious consideration as part of any "hunting battery for life". You can have and use many others but, if choices are limited, these would form a good core.

.22LR - Fun, legal for small game, and because it is good to train the progeny.
.308 - The .30-06 became what it is only because it was a military round. The .308 will eventually displace it for the same reason. Ammo and components will be available for over 100 years. Good enough for almost any hunting in the world.
.375H&H - Good enough for what the .308 can't handle. Ubiquitous.
12 gauge shotgun - Needs no explanation.

Beyond that core, my favorites include 300H&H and 7x65R. I also do most of my shotgun shooting with a certain 12 bore Paradox gun. That Paradox has taken many animals including deer and pheasants.

A small battery to hunt the world....

There is a lot of good bird hunting out there, so lets start with a 12 ga shotgun.

1 Rimfire, make mine a Ruger 10/22.

One Varmit rifle, An AR in .223, or a nice bolt gun in 22-250.

One general purporse medium bore rifle such as a .270 Win, or 300 WSM.

One heavy magnum for Elk, Moose and such, make mine a .338 Win Mag.

One heavy barrel loooooong range rifle for 500-1000 yard shots, 7mm STW will do fine here.

One big gun. Something in the .416+ range. I'll let all you Africa boys debate that one.

I choose a .22 Hornet over a .22 LR in hypothetical coversations like this cause I can reload the Hornet and do everything with a Hornet that I do with a LR and more.

I could just make do with a .22 Hornet and a .375 H&H if I had too!!!
