Depends on which country you hunt in. If it is in Zim - go MARS!

I think you mean Global Rescue.

Go with Global Rescue.

Ganyana, pls correct me if this is wrong, but MARS is strictly "bush evacuation", and they will not fly one back to the States - Yes/No? I am under the impression that a company like Global Rescue utilizes resources such as MARS in Zim (or the Flying Doctors in Tanz) to get somebody out of the bush, but then has the ability as part of the contract to go beyond this.

Not saying this is the best approach as typically I recommend GR to others, but for the ~$10/day I usually get the MARS from the Zim outfitter, noting I have a good BC/BS plan, and figuring that if the PH needs to make the call they are better equipped to call that which they are familiar with (MARS).

If one has Global Rescue or MedJet, the initial call must go there then they will determine the next action. So the note would be that the hunter must review this w/the PH (and maybe the camp manager) prior and provide them with a copy of the "membership card" supplied by GR (or MJ).

Why Global Rescue?

I currently have Medjet, but it expires soon. What is the major difference? I thought that Wendell preferred Medjet since he had used their services???????

At DSC, the GR rep said they now have evacuation services as well as medical services. As for what Wendell recommends, I think I remember him writing a post a few months back that medjet assist gave him a horrible runaround nearly costing him his life.

They have had this feature, only under the covers it was another resource that they contracted with. It would be interesting if they are handling this aspect themselves now, and for what areas/countries.

You remember correctly. If they had their way, it would have been WORSE than if I had no coverage at all.

studdog, do a search of the forums for MedJet and Global Rescue. There was a thread a couple years ago where ForrestB posted about his experience as well.

In a nutshell, my experience and a few others showed MedJet to be concerned with $$$ more than human life.

I can not recommend their services after my experience.

Wendell, Thanks for the feedback. My wife and I travel quite a bit. This type service is important to have. We previously had Medjet, and fortuately never had to use it. George

Global Rescu seems to have the bases covered ..

Global Rescue

They make some good points in their recent promo article is the Safari Times publication being ...

Tips & Tricks: for remote risky situations in particular

Take a Sattelite Phone c/w GPS tracking capability ( enables pinpoint coordinating for chopper)

Provide GR with your planned itinarary prior to travelling

Let your Outfitter/Tour operator know you are on GR and provide them contact number in case you are not able to call yourself

GR have updated intelligence reports on country innoculation and epidemics etc

Make sure you are covered for the full duration of arrival departure from destination

Good luck

I have had both. I never had to use Medjet. I did have the occasion to use Global Rescue.

I was in Argentina hunting with both of my sons. Both became very ill. I had just switched to GR. I decided to call. Within minutes they had a paramedic on the phone. In substantially less than an hour, they had me on the phone with a specialist from Johns Hopkins. They gave me very specific instructions. They told me exactly what hospital to go to and what tests to have done. They had the plane ready to go. I called it off as they had gotten them a lot better.

After we got home, they even called to check on them and give further advise.

I will stick with GR.

I have been pondering the same question. Pretty much decided to go with Global Rescue based on conversations at SCI and inquires from each one.

I had a complete cock up with Global Rescue. My advise if you are considering buying their service is to ask the specifics about how they will do what they say they can do. Ask who will actually retrieve your ass from X airstrip in X country and just how long it will take. In '07 they could answer none of those questions for me and made no attempt to. They just blew me off even though they knew I had contacted Don Causey to check them out and that I was a booking agent that could promote their business. These people are so clueless that they offered to give Adam a commission if he would promote their business after they had basically told me to fuck off. They have offered to give me a free membership now but I would not touch these people with a 10 foot pole.

MARS will get you as far as any hospital in South Africa - and it is not just 'bush evacuation' it covers everything for the duration of the cover. I think it was $5 per day- which i thought was good cover considering their 'you call, we haul' policy. Never had occasion to use them though....

Ganyana ..

So (can ány Zim's citizen/resident) in fact take out MARS insurance on an (annual basis) to cover for all his or his families medical emergencies accidents and the likes, because I hear that often everyday working people (outfitters/PH for example) dont generally have any medical cover as it is too expensive !!

Do you (cover yourself with MARS) or do you wait for the worst case scenario to occur and then scream help ??

How much would it cost to cover yourself annually with MARS ??

You need to read the fine print and get a gut feel for these guys.

Global Rescue is located right across the street from my office.

I used to be a MedJet Assist guy, but not any more.

Now it's Global Rescue for my family and me.

I have used Medjet in the past. tried to sign up with them last year. They said they would not cover anyone from Washington State. I've been told it was due to our sales tax policy on out of state purchaces. Went with Global Rescue, better coverage, a little more money.
