crbutler2 boxes should be a great plenty for what you need. I usually end up with 3-5 shots for zero then 1.5/animal (including finishers)
But ammo is hard to come by over there at times, and in the interest of "paying it forward" I always bring my ammo weight limit and leave it there when allowed.

graybirdI guess it depends upon how much aiming fluid you drink the night before, and how good your towards is the following morning!

lavacaYou get 5 kilos, not counting the lock box the rounds are in. Why not max that out? Shoot them on the range, cough, cough. You'll never die from too much ammunition and if it doesn't come home, you shot it.

Code46 rounds per animal, then round it up to the nearest box will leave you plenty spare, just in case.
If your a good shot with no problems you'll probably average less than 3 rounds per animal with sight in.

Bwana338Depending on your ability to make the shot.
20 rounds should be all you need.
40 rounds is usually what I take. and I always have spare ammo left.
Now if you think you will bust your budget and shoot everything you see then go for the 100 rounds.

Great idea, but just keep in mind the laws of the country that you will be hunting in. If its in South Africa,, if your PH does not have a licensed 30.06 , it will not be legal to leave the ammo with him.
Two boxes will be plenty, and 30.06 is a very popular caliber over here, so you should have no problems picking up ammo, if for some reason you ran short.
Remember to post your report and photos when you get back!

leopards valley safaris4 boxes , we got baboons, we got monkeys, we got work for those left overs.
At the cost of the safari and airfare, get premium rounds and get enough

16 April 2014, 15:12
shootawayTake as many as you can and leave the rest with your PH.The last time I spoke with my PH he mentioned the rds I left him and how good they were.
16 April 2014, 18:45
JGRaiderJust thinking out loud here, but I'm taking 60 rounds.......... and a spare scope. If a scope goes bonkers, could possibly need some extra ammo to get it lined out? That's my thinking anyway. Too much is better than not enough IMO.
16 April 2014, 19:20
Chris01I always brought 60 rounds of 30-06. Never used more than 20. Gave the rest to the PH.

MARK H. YOUNGTed,
I used to take my allowance of 5 kilos and soon found out it wasn't necessary. It just made added weight in my luggage. I think for what your doing 40 rounds is enough.

ravenr1 round per every 2 animals.
Just wait for them to line up.
Oh and 2 extras to check your scope.
Better add 1 more in case you drop one.
WAIT! What happened to the loin cloth and
sharp knife plans?
Trica will be SO proud!!

ted thornTricia probably wears the loin cloth a lot better than me. She has the figure to pull that look off better than any of the hair legs on this trip
I try to keep sharp objects out of her hands.....I make her mad from time to time

LionHunterI always figure 3 rounds per animal and 10 to check zero and make adjustments. That has always been plenty, as many animals should only require one shot. No need to carry excess weight on flights. That makes two boxes perfect for your safari and you should have plenty left over at the conclusion of the hunt. Enjoy!

BuffNutI vote for bringing the maximum weight the airline will permit and leaving what you don't use behind - especially for a popular caliber.
I always leave the unused ammo behind and the PHs are always very appreciative. I even had one ASK me for my unused .375H&H once, even though I was already planning to leave it.
17 April 2014, 02:33
DuckearI have never heard of a hunt ruined by too much ammo.
At the end of the safari, either leave it with your PH if legal, if not, shoot it up for fun with the PH and trackers. I got a kick out of the trackers shooting up my last ammo and they enjoyed it as well.

lavacaI never leave any rounds with the PH. You see, I'm a stickler on zeros and shoot all those extra rounds on the range checking zeros.

SaeedYou might wish to take notice of an telegraph operator in East Africa during t5he war.
Apparently he had heard that a German patrol, consisting of 42 individuals, were heading his way.
He sent the following telegraph to headquarters:
"Armed German patrol is heading towards us. Please send one rifle and 42 bullets"
Talk about confidence!

That is my number too. 30-06 is relatively modestly priced. Not too bulky. Take different loads if you wish. Leave the excess for the PH. I'd bet the most of them have a use for it since so it is so popular.

I saw it in an old African hunting book.
I am afraid I cannot remember the name.

ted thornI'm a handloader so before I could leave any ammo I would have to let the PH know they are loaded out long

This reminded me of a story by a Tanzania PH. Sad however true.
A Wealthy hunting client booked a 21 day Tanzania Safari for the full package.
The client thought he was quite the marksman and was very good at putting holes in the center of targets while at the shooting range.
So the client brought his 2 rifles and 21 shells for the 21 day safari, with the thinking that one animal a day at 1 bullet would be all he needed.
The client was having difficulty making the shot on animals that were stalked to with in reasonable shooting range.
after 4 days in the field the client had 0 animals in the salt and had expended his 21 rounds of ammunition.
on Day 5 a conference was held between the client and the PH concerning the lack of ammunition by the client.
There were 2 options available for the client, Have a charter fly in with additional ammunition for the client to use or the safari hunt was over.
However, prior clients had left some of their unused ammunition in camp with the PH. The PH, upon checking the surplus ammo found some ammunition that matched the clients rifle's.
The Ammo prior clients had left with the PH save the current clients safari.
