Eland SlayerCan't we all just get along?????
I've been a member of AR for 5 years now, and recently there seems to be a record number of "holier than thou" types on this wonderful forum that Saeed has so graciously allowed us to participate on. Why the need for an "AR ethics police department"? Okay.....surely each of us understands the simple fact that we will never completely agree on everything. That's just life. We all have our opinions and viewpoints.....but is all the bickering, arguing, namecalling, and the like really necessary?

It shouldn't matter how one hunts, so long as it's legal and generally accepted in the area where the hunt took place. High fence.....low fence.....no fence.....use of dogs.....native game.....introduced game.....feeders.....food plots.....scent attractants.....bow.....rifle.....open sights.....scope......etc..... Honestly, who cares? We're all hunters. We all hunt using the methods we want to, and we're all going to continue doing so, far into the forseeable future. No amount of bitching is ever going to change anyone's mind on anything "ethics" related. All it does is take away from the potentially great conversations to be had on this forum.

I have my own opinions and beliefs about hunting.....but for the most part, I don't attempt to push them onto others. I like to encourage people to enjoy this great sport in any way they are able to. Why do some feel the need to shit on another hunter's experience simply because he does not agree with it? What is accomplished?.....NOTHINGPersonally, I'd much rather spend my time here learning from others' experiences and sharing my own.....as well as discussing things in a civil manner. So here's my question.....who (besides me) is sick and tired of reading pages upon pages of bitching, complaining, and arguments that don't contribute to anything except a bad atmosphere on this forum?Yes.....I am tired of itNo.....I'm not tired of itI don't care either way

The disagreeements now are nothing compared to then.

GeedubyaES,
I know that you are a sincere young man and still young and impressionable.
So, take it from an old fart.
In a word,
No.
No, we can't just all get along.
If you are any type of a student of history you should know that. Stick around on planet earth for another forty to sixty years and you will experience for yourself.
Then, when a well meaning and sincere young man asks you the same thing, you can say.......
"take it from an old fart.........

You should have seen how bad it was before 2005. Back then a few of the "holier than thou types" had their own private armies who would harass anyone who disagreed with them.
We will always disagree. Most people who have been around for a while are able to disagree without getting obnoxious.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.
Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

talentrecI think his point is that we're all <supposedly> on the same team. And teams that are divided lose...
I just got an email from a guy in my SCI Chapter who just got back from his first plains game safari in South Africa. He and his wife had shot a couple of nice animals and had a great time. When I asked him who his outfitter was, he said it was Out of Africa...
Would I have liked to tell him what a bunch of scoundrels they are? Absolutely. But then I thought to myself, why rain on his parade? He just had the best experience of his life. When he thinks about going back, I'll just quietly advise him that there may be other outfitters to consider.

martinbnsI find most forums have a shelf life before they become dominated by the grumpy old men(age isn't really a condition). I used to hang out in the 24hourcampfire a lot but it just got old. Every thread was Obama bashing. I am no fan of the guy but it got old to me.
This one has different common themes most around PH ethics and high fence.
We will never really get along.

Scott KingI think that along with the name calling, insulting and crass remarks that go hand in hand with not getting along, there usually is also some kind of defense for the position that a contrary forum member is advocating.
If an arguement or disagreement develops between posting members that is not factually supported than the rest of the board can note accordingly and be on our merry way. However if the arguement is defended by each side with at least credible evidence than the board is educated and the better for it.
I suppose I do take some posts a little more seriously than I should and I think generally it would be wise for me to anonymously smile to myself at the anonymous posters vitriolic rants and with perhaps a snide reply or two let it be done at that. The nuts on AR display themselves as just so in a reasonable amount of time and are either driven off by the members or banned by Admin in a reasonable amount of time.
I think getting along would be less of an education.

That's an insightful and compassionate attitude ES, but as
Boltshooter points out, it's difficult to reconcile your abhorrence for 'name calling' and people pushing their views on others with your personal signature:

NavalukYouare a young guy who appears to be surprised that what you consider normal ethical hunting would cause some people to quit hunting rather than hunt that way.
Welcome to the real world. You are going to see this in many points in your life so might as well suck it up and face it now.
Remember none of it means you are wrong or unethical just because someone disagrees. You are ethical or unethical independant of anyones opinion.
Also I am sick of Polls and I have nothing good to say about the Irish either.

Come On! Get along with all of us, you grumpy old men (farts, bastards, a-holes, etc. etc.)!
27 August 2010, 07:37
GeedubyaSG,
You've probably heard the one about the prodigal irish daughter that comes home from America after being gone 15 years or so. She sails home on her own yacht, showers her family with cash clothes jewelry and such. When her father asks her what she does to make all the money to support such a life style and lavish gifts. She tells him. He being hard of hearing doesn't correctly understand what she says. He immediately gets red in the face, stamps his feet and tells her she is disinherited, and that not only will he never speak to her again, but that he does not want to see her again, ever.
After a couple of weeks, the daughter decides its time to leave. The mom prevails on the dad to wish his daughter farewell. His final statement to her elicits a response. She say,no dad I'm a prostitute, how else could I make so much money and afford all this.
At this point the old mans heart melts and he declares,ah me own daughter, by gosh and by gorra, I thought you said you had become a protestant. Come give your old man a hug.
I also have a old friend from County Claire, Ireland. His favorite saying is, "a lie well told, will serve as good as the truth any day!

27 August 2010, 08:24
GeedubyaNo offense, there ES,
but a couple of observations,
when all is said and done, more is said than done...........
I agree that pissing matches are a waste of time, but, why do you think programs like Jerry Springer,Oprah, reality programs are so successful. Most folks want to waste time and escape their humdrum lives.
No one said you were ignorant or stupid. However, my dad used to tell me that a fellow didn't have enough sense to pour piss out of a boot till he's forty. He was a wise man that passed at 86. Now that I am almost 60 I can relate, more and more.

BlankES: Controversary is generally good, and some great debates have been hashed out here at AR on the "Net. However, I also think most of us here have a very well developed freedom of choice. When the thread deteriorates into a name-calling pissin' match, we then choose to ignore it, and move on to another worthwhile post. I know I do!

My signature is meant to be taken lightly, as somewhat of an exagerated joke. Furthermore, it is purely political and has nothing to do with hunting.....which is what I'm referring to in this thread.

Idaho SharpshooterDon't you understand that you having more money than most of the world is wrong? You need to sell all of your possessions, donate that money to the poor, and spend the next five years roaming the country, wearing clothes that you let me pick out of the barrel at the Salvation Army for you and experience firsthand, how the homeless people in this country live. You will learn a lot doing that.
After that, please return to your old job making money and return here to lecture us on life and how we should behave. By the end of the first year your entire outlook on life will have been revamped.
You may have learned the difference between legal and ethical.
To update a French quote: The Law, in it's infinite wisdom forbids Bill Gates as well as the homeless to sleep under bridges.
This notion you have, that we should all change to conform to your notions of civility? Where did you acquire it?
I am not picking on you young man, but I will be sixty-one next month and I know better. What you request is that we relinquish our own notions of acceptable or not to suit you. Not even Saeed and Don have been able to do that.
Good luck finding this opinionless utopia you seek.

I must not be very good at explaining myself because this does not have much of anything to do with my initial post.
I don't want anyone to be "opinionless".....I simply wish we could all act like ADULTS in our discussions. Not long ago I recall reading posts between two adult men calling each other things like "douchebag", "cocksucker", and "f*ckhead" over something I thought was very minor. Seriously? Are we high schoolers?
If the purpose of this post is that difficult for some to understand, then I apologize and you may all just let it die.

drwesfor you guys that don't go to the bow hunting forum,, and many of you don't because some have strong opinions about bowhunting as well, Rich ruffled the feathers of some bow hunters on a post there blasting someone because they were hunting over a feed trough. Basically the old "ethics" thread. Being very critical of others hunting methods can stir strong emotions and feelings. I told them on the forum, Rich is just being Rich and stirred the pot, nothing new, nothing mean spirited and no ugly name calling, or at least not yet. Being very critical of how another person hunts doesn't win you a great deal of points with folks. That was the point Eland Slayer was trying to make,, why stomp on a guy cause he hunts different than you do.. Oh,, by the way,, i like the different discussions and opinions,, but to go to the point of if you don't hunt exactly like me,, then you dirty rotten blank blank,,,It does not serve the community well. It you care to read the posts,,,, look at Blue Wildebeast video thread.
