I am in a quandary. I am looking at a Swaro Z6(i) 1-6x, 1.7x-10x or 2x-12x.

I'd like to use the same scope for Elk as well which would be at 300+ yards.

So, which is the highest low end resolution (1x, 1.7x, or 2X) I can get away with in Zimbabwe for DG (Buffalo, Lion etc.).

BTW, the scope would be going on a .375 H&H.

The swaro 1.7x-10x would be an excellent choice

I have a Zeiss 1,5-6x42 with a quick relase mount on my .458
It works in every situation and I am very happy with it.

I use a S&B 1.25x4 in my win70 375HH.

already held some buffalo in charge and she never hurt me, even in areas of closed forest.

Hey bugger, if you can afford a lion hunt then get 2 scopes.
One 1.6x6 with quick detachable mounts with a thick reticle
An get 6-9 x 42 for the long range shots with a thin reticle.

The DG animals will need heavy slow bullets and the long range Elk will need lighter rounds to give you the distance.

Even with the same rifle and rounds you will need to constantly reset it for close or far shots.

So 2 scopes for 2 totally different jobs, good luck on the decision and hope the hunt goes well

+1 on what lvs suggested; That really makes sense, I think I'll do the same for my .375R!

I've got a Merk 140e in 6.5x55 with a S&B 30mm 1.25x4 for PG, Stag and I'll probably use it for elk this next year. Great scope

I have shot 3 elk over 300 yards with my Swarovski 1-6x on a 300H&H and never felt I needed more magnification.

Out of the three choices you gave us I think I would pick the 1.7x10. I can't imagine what it would not be appropriate for when mounted on a 375.

I actually have the Z6i 1.7x10 on my .375 H&H and love it.

Go with the 1-6, The 6X is more than enough magnification for elk at 300 (or more) yet the TRUE 1x is incredibly useful for shooting with both eyes open at close range, or for dangerous game. No need for 2 scopes, just set it up one time, pick a good bullet, shoot the heck out of it and life will be very good no matter what situation you may encounter. I have my 375R set up similarly and it is my go to rifle for just about everything. "Beware of the man with one rifle!"

Go with a Leupold VX 6, more bang for the buck.

Not if you value optical quality. You will most likely be seeing one from me for sale in the classifieds shortly that I wanted to try. 1/2 the price but for good reason.

If I get to spend your money, all a 1.7-10 Swaro with an illuminated CD reticle needs is a backup just like it.

I have a Swarovski Z6 2-12 illuminated ret'. I have used it for running boar at close range in Europe and to punch paper at long range. The illumination range enables the red dot to be the primary aim system for both eyes open shooting and yet can be turned off or lowered to allow precise placement with the fine ret' for zeroing. I love this scope and were I to be left with but one scope for life this would be it. Having handled the 1-6 variant last year I covet it and would place it at the head of my list of objects I desire to own (along with Apel swing off scope mounts for both scopes) but having been brought up on higher (pick-the-hair-you-shoot) scopes I would not change to 1-6 as a rest of life scope.

There was a very good article some time back in the NRA mag (RIFLE I believe) regarding DG scopes. The upshot was that very few scopes survive recoil. Swarovski was one that did. The surprise was that the Bushnell Elite (old B&L) range did almost as well at 1/4 the price. Leupold did not hold up as well as you would expect. The other thing I recall was the caveat not to put the front clamp ring over the glass.

My personal preference is to use a low fixed power scope. For one thing, less to go wrong. For another, lighter means less shear force on the mounts. Mounts are a weak point. I use a 2 3/4 fixed power and find that's plenty for longish shots on any kind of four legged target. But then I was trained to hit a pie plate using battle sights at 500 yards.

Thanks all for the replies. I decided to go ahead with the Swaro Z6(i) 1.7-10x BT-4A. Like Mark said, I figure that scope will handle everything I'd want to shoot with the .375 H&H.
