Dispite the outraged comments, and possibly lack of appropriate planning in this particular instance, fire is of great long term benefit to the environment. Too much of our "wild" lands worldwide, and particularly in the United States, have been artificially protected from fire and have thus been degraded by invasive brush species and subsequently in the wildlife carrying capacity of the range.
