I was hunting one time and we ran across 4 Masai passing through, and they were really decked out, however when they left, they had sold me almost everything they had on... The PH swore I must have played strip poker with them as they were the first naked Masai he had ever seen!!

He also had to gall to say my Swaheli was the worst he had ever heard, oh well it served me well this time!! beer

I was looking at these photos and I swear I recognized a couple of the Masai ... those photos were taken with one of my clients, Conrad Rehagen when he hunted Lion with Alan in 2004. I recognize a few of those people from the photos he sent me.
Here they are More Masai Photos The first two photos are of the same people as featured in Alan's photos.

What a great and interesting culture.

I really need a couple of those long bladed spears for my collection!

When I was travelling through Maasailand in the 1980's I took a few great photos of a group of soon-to-be morani. They never arrived back from the developer nor the negatives. Am I right the young blokes wearing black are off to a circumcision ceremony?

I like the cattle photos, especially the first with the inward curved "horns of the bull" with the pink sky behind.

Thanks for the photos. thumb

I need to get in the "red" paint business. Seems there is a market for it.

Great photos again, Saeed and Wendell! I wish I would have had my camera handy the day I was in the middle of nowhere in Lolkisale. We had been driving and driving, looking for buff tracks when, under a tree in the 90 degree heat we see a Masai moran dead asleep under a tree! Spear in the ground, shuka askew, he was practically comatose. Don't know where the party was the night before but he had one hell of a time! We laughed our asses off all the way back to HQ!

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Great photos everyone. Anyone ever get the chance to try to throw one of their spears to see what it's like? Is that permissible or is it against the cultural mores? I am pretty good at throwing spears and would welcome the chance to give one of theirs a try if it was possible. What about anyone out there? Had the chance to do so?

While I was in Tanzania (outside Arusha) in 2000 we got our hunting vehicle "stuck properly" in some fine black mud they called "black cotton". Several hours later we were still digging. We became the entertainment for the local Masai who came from miles around to watch us. They were not interested in being hired to help as the entertainment value of watching us struggle must have been worth more. Eventually they pitched in and helped us. They had previously not wanted any photos taken of them then suddenly they wanted their photo taken.

I wonder if taking some various patterned red material (used on way over as padding in cases) to Africa might be a good gift or trading material (pun intended)?
