Old as they probably get, Charles. I think this one was part of the original migration from the 1800's...

I understand that its not everyone's cup of tea, but man, what a special animal to bag.(In my view)

KMG Hunting SafarisBeautiful Cape Bushbuck ram. These secretive animals should absolutely be on anyone's list visiting the Eastern Cape.

KMG Hunting SafarisSensational Lechwe. Took 3 full days to finally connect on this male after looking over numerous animals which were just not what we were looking for. Finally came together. Giving up is simply not an option.

KMG Hunting SafarisFallow Deer arrived in the Eastern Cape with the British during the 1800's. Originally, they were kept on the ships for food, but were released upon reaching our shores. Over the last 200 years, they have spread wide across the Eastern Cape, and can be hunted in quite a few free range areas. They might not be an African animal, but we love having them here.

KMG Hunting SafarisNot many things as impressive as a big Eland bull. Could not have happened to a nicer guy.
13 December 2024, 21:16
KMG Hunting SafarisHave we mentioned that we love Bushbuck? Certainly one of the candidates for animal of the year.

KMG Hunting SafarisWhat an incredible Nyala bull. Our hunter had taken a Nyala before but informed us that if he saw a monster, he would certainly be interested. After seeing this bull in a valley the previous day, they just could not make it happen with the bull disappearing into the thickets. Plans were made to try and glass the same valley the following day. This time, everything lined up on this magnificent animal.

KMG Hunting Safaris2024 was a stellar year for Lechwe. Compressed rings, solid bases. Big hooks. All that one can ask for.

KMG Hunting SafarisAfter successfully hunting this beautiful Sable, our hunter took a liking after seeing a few Roans. A couple of days later, we managed to find this Roan well past his prime. Noticed the regression in the body on this old bull.

KMG Hunting SafarisPlease bear with us as we try to catch up with how the rest of the season went. Some challenging hunting in the snow with freezing conditions. When you focus on age, the rest will take care of itself.

KMG Hunting SafarisAn unbelievable free range, Cape Kudu bull that we left at first glance. Even though we knew he would go mid 50's, we weren't quite sure whether he was old enough to meet our own standards. These exceptional animals simply has to be given time to spread their wonderful genes. After not being able to get the bull out of our minds, we went back to the valley and found him a couple of 100 yards away. This time, we took the time to get even closer, using the spotting scope to make sure he checked all the boxes before finally deciding to take him.

KMG Hunting SafarisOne of my dearest friendships made through hunting right here. We have been to some incredible wild places over the years. Here, sitting with a big Spotted Hyena. We could see on our trail cam that there was one individual Hyena with what looked like a snare, and I could remember thinking to myself how great it would be to get that specific one. No easy feat picking out one from of a group. Generally, I try not to mess around too much when they come in. This time when they came in, I could clearly see him and the marks left by the snare was blatant. The first snare caught him through his mouth, and can be seen if you look carefully on the photo. I can only imagine that with the struggle, it slipped from his mouth to around his neck, eventually breaking free. Glad to end his suffering and could not be happier with the results.

KMG Hunting SafarisThis stud of a Bushbuck ram was hunted with us in the late season during 2024. Big, chipped bases, heavy to the top with a big body and thick neck to go with it. No doubt he was the main guy in his area.

KMG Hunting SafarisAlways so rewarding finding these old buggers.

KMG Hunting SafarisA sensational Warthog. During the warm months, especially over a full moon, these big boars go almost completely nocturnal. They simply disappear from being seen during the day time, as food is generally plentiful over the summer months. When the cold from the Winter don't bother them, they prefer the safety of darkness. Keep this in mind when planning a safari and if a big pig is on your list.

fulvioIn our neck of the woods it is the exact opposite:
Warthogs are out and about shortly after daybreak and under cover (usually a burrow) by nightfall, signalling the all clear for the Bush Pig to come out of its lair in the thick brush to forage during the nocturnal hours.

In normal circumstances such as Winter, I agree. Then ours do the same. As you know, Warthogs don't have a lot of hair so the cold affects them.
During the summer months when its hot, the big boars go missing.

KMG Hunting SafarisAfter getting the call on another lamb killed, arrangements were made to get the hounds over to the kill first thing the next morning. All farmers in our area know to leave any kill and not to disturb it in any way. There is a very high probability that the culprit will return during the night or early hours of the morning, giving the hounds an excellent base to work from. First thing in the morning, PH, hunter and hounds ensued upon the kill site and they immediately confirmed that he did indeed come back . This Caracal was no different, and the experience of the hounds were tested taking a few hours to eventually tree.

KMG Hunting SafarisHunting the members of the Tiny 10 is such an underrated hunt. Each one brings its own challenges. In your pursuit to complete the slam, it takes you to 3-4 parts of Southern Africa. Out of the 10, six of them can be hunted in the Eastern Cape. Three of them can be split between Limpopo/Kwazulu Natal/Mozambique with the last one needing you wonder into Namibia.
Here is an excellent Steenbuck taken on the last safari of the 2024 season.

KMG Hunting SafarisJust got word from head Professional Hunter Nick that he got notified of a fresh kill from one of the nearby landowners yesterday. Upon inspection, he could clearly see the work of a big Caracal but could also see that some Jackal had eaten as well. First thing this morning they went straight to the kill, and as soon as the hounds got there, they start giving tongue.
This has got to be one of the biggest Caracal taken over the pack. An absolute unit.

KMG Hunting SafarisThese Cape Mountain Zebra are absolutely striking! One of the great conservation success stories where hunters' dollars are directly responsible for the advancement of the species. It's a real shame that USFWS don't recognize this and not allowing Americans to import them.

KMG Hunting SafarisStill up in the mountains, we found this lone Black Wildebeest bull keeping an eye on his patch of land that he has claimed. When you have lone bulls holding their little patches similar to a scrape, you know you have a healthy population. These bulls will scrape, paw, urinate and perform in these patches in order to impress the cows. If you bump a bull off these scrapes, they will invariably return, often on the same day.
