Looking For A Hunt In Namibia

I have dreamed of an African Hunt for years and narrowed it down to a Namibia Plains Game Hunt. This would be my first African hunt.

Here are the details. I'm 71 and in very good health. Can walk 2+ miles with no problem: except to rest 15-20 minutes afterwards. Looking for a 7 to 10 day Plains Game Hunt. I have successfully hunted Duck, Deer, Antelope and Bear in the States. I have the firearms I would need; 30-06 and .300 WBY Mark 5.

I'm not looking for a "A-1, Deluxe," all the bells and whistles, 5 star lodge hunt. I'm looking for a very nice lodge with very nice accommodations and food because my wife will be accompanying me as an observer. She may go into the field with me, but not every day, so a very nice Lodge would be nice to lounge around in on these days.

I'm looking at 1 X 1 Ph. to hunt Gemsbok, Hartebeest, Springbok/Impala and Zebra. Also, I understand the daily rate and the trophy fees, but what, on average, do other fees run: Trophy prep, Dipping, Taxidermy in Windhoek and Shipping to the States.

On the Forum's in the past, Jan Oelefse, Boet Nel, Okanduka Seibe and Gras Hunting Ranch were recommended. Are these still a good choice and any others to add?
What about the travel agents Gracy Travel and Kathi Klimes? Are they still the ones to go with? What about a Booking Agent or going directly to the Outfitter?

When the outfitter has been chosen, what is the general rule as to how far in advance you must book the hunt. My preference as to the time of year would be sometime from the middle of July to the end of August.

Try Eitaalo Safaris with Andre and Anel Rousseau. Fun hunt, fun people to hunt with. We have been there twice and loved every mintue. Also, shot a 60" kudu.

Regarding the travel agents, I used Gracy with good results in 2008 and used Steve Turner last year. Steve used to be with Gracy and posts here regularly. I have not used Kathi but have spoken with her and she has an excellent reputation.

Booking a safari is fun on its own, enjoy the process!

Our first Safari was with Jan Oelefse about 16 years ago. I have not been back since but my wife and I are thinking about making our last Safari someday with them as well. A very special trip. I dont see how you could go wrong.

Suspect you are getting plenty of good advise, but I am going to further complicate your decision process by suggesting Nick Nolte. He and his wife are perfect hosts, facilities are excellent, prices reasonable and he has access to a wide range of different (and very large) areas. Isabel would be perfect company for your wife at times she might not want to accompany you. Check his website: Nick Nolte Hunting Safaries.

You don't have a lot of time to make arangements given the dates you are targeting, so I suggest you talk to Keith or Jack Jr. at Jack Atcheson & Sons: www.atcheson.com and have them work the details with Nick as well as putting you in touch with Gracy Travel. I've had nothing but positive experiences with both - and as you can surmise, a great hunt with Nick.

Check out Van Heerden Safaris.
Hentie Van Heerden and his wife Denise run the outfit. Huge areas to hunt. (118 square miles with no high fences.) Not over hunted. You deal directly with the outfitter/PH, or his wife, Denise.
My son and I hunted with Hentie a couple years ago. We had a great time and shot several good animals. Not 5 star but excellent accommodations.
Hentie can answer all your other questions about the hunt.
I highly recommend him.

Jan Olefese was a great experience with super nice people at a reasonable price. Used Bev Wunderlich of J&B adventures as booking agent in Centennial, Colorado as booking agent. Everything went smooth and Jan and Annette Olefese are super people with great accomadations and the Food was excellent.
