AtkinsonNo one I know hunts Indian elephants anymore.

PackerbackerIs it because they are scarce or for other reasons?

bmpreglerI believe that they are not hunted anymore is that most of them have been domesticated andnow work in the lumber industry, but don't know for sure.

RBHuntI just know that if I could book a hunt to India for elephant, tiger, gaur, and sambar I would be happy even if I could never go on another hunt ever. If India had just been able to manage there wildlife better.

RHBThe Asiatic Elephant in India is a protected species. Some of them are domesticated but there are many that are still in the wild.
A genuine rogue elephant can still be shot. Someone I know here has done this in the past, in the north east part of India. You do need the necessary permission from the relevant wildlife authorities for this.

mehulkamdarbmpregler is absolutely right. In India the elephant was domesticated many centuries ago - Paurava (Porus) used them on the battlefield against Alexander the Great.
Shooting an elephant would have had all the cachet of shooting domestic oxen - that's why the tiger was the most prized game.
Many elephants are used in the timber industry as they can get into forests and walk out with logs held in their trunks. After the tsunami, elephants from Thailand's logging industry were used to move cars and debris and clear affected areas.
Rogues are a particular danger and they are shot after a magistrate gives permission to do this in India. Other Asian countries may have different regulations.
Good hunting!
