Eland - where to go?

Really enjoyed hunting eland on my safari. Wondering if there is a place where I could get two or more on quota and hunt a large area with other plains game avail.

Thanks for any ideas.

I have some areas in zim where we can hunt more than one .i have both free range and in a fenced area but over 300 000 acres.

The most economical place might be Namibia. You can find good eland populations on both game farms and on conservancies. Some of the game farms are quite large, and even if high fenced a high fence means nothing to an eland.

Tholo Safaris in Botswana.

Their bushman trackers are incredible. On my eland, we followed tracks for about 4 hours before catching up to the bull. It is a very exciting hunt, and by far my favorite plains game hunt.

You may try Mokore Safaris.

I have hunted with Neil Duckworth on Coutada Nine, Sengwa Research, and their concession on the Save. I took a very good eland on Coutada Nine on a very good tracking hunt. Sengwa Research holds some very good eland and all three have plenty of other plainsgame to hunt.

Not sure what is left on quota, but they are in the states for the shows right now.

Having hunted Eland in Botswana (nr Ghanzi) and also in Zim (West Nic as well as Sengwa/Chirisa) I would vote for Botswana every time. Of course this is private land and not all hunting is equal. So do a little research and pick a place with plenty of Eland.

My experience as well.

I would go back to Tholo JUST to hunt 2-3 eland over 7-10 days with a smaller caliber double rifle in a heartbeat.

See my hunt report below on Namibia free range eland. We did it and had a blast. lots of tracking and stalking.
KOWAS Safaris is who I would recommend.

Bishopstone in Southern Zimbabwe has a ton of Livingstone Eland on its property. Bishopstone is south of the Bubye and near the border with South Africa. I believe that PH John Hunt and his wife Debbie are running it right now. Best to you, my friend!

Eland was the most difficult animal I hunted in Africa, lots and lots of walking. There were always a lot of zebra and impala around the eland and so getting close enough for a shot was really tough. Those darn zebra and impala kept busting us.

I hunted Bubye, saw a lot of eland but, like I say, they were really hard to get up on. Finally got a shot and dropped an excellent bull.

I was going to be a smart ass and say Africa but decided against it.

I am surprised no one has brought up the obvious question. What species do you want to hunt? I am not sure how many species there are. There are at least 4 different species. maybe more.

I think Livingston's is the most common. Lord Derby the most rare. You also have cape and east African.

There are Eland and there are Eland..The Lord Derby Eland of the Northern Provinces is much larger than the Eland of Tanzania, Zimbabwe and So. Africa...of these three I would send s client to RSA with Philip Price of Swartkei Safaris, he has thousands of Southern Eland, and great trophy quality. I have several safari companies in both areas.

Having been lucky enough to shoot all the different varieties of eland I don't think that the LD is much larger than the Livingstone's, Cape or East African. The LD is more striking in appearance and horn but not really a bigger animals.

Not that my opinion means much, but I hunted with Swartkei in 2008 (not eland) and had a great time. They run an impressive operation.

Great information guys - really appreciate it. Not looking for Lord Derby - just had a blast tracking eland over multiple days in the BVC and want to take another run at them.

As spectacular as the Lord Derby are, you can have a fantastic wild safari experience chasing big eland in Mozambique for about half the price.

Lots of good advice. I hear Botswana has lots of Eland on some of the game farms.

It is VERY hard to beat a LD Eland hunt. Personally I would say it is just THE hunt in Africa.

I have hunted eland in Namibia and in the Save with Mokore. Both were good, but the one I shot in Zimbabwe was bigger. I am taking my 18-yr-old son to Zim in June to hunt with Mokore. I highly recommend them!

Lord Derby are magnificent but you can go hunt in Botswana/Tholo or Save for less than 1/3 the price on a single hunt and shoot additional eland for around $1500.

I need to finally take my double hunting and go shoot a boatload of eland. Hopefully in 2016.

I spoke with PH John Hunt at the SCI Sow today about Eland at Bishopstone. Contact him at Georgia Safaris (Zimbabwe). He said that he can certainly get you set up on a big Livingstone eland.

Having just got back from lord derby eland, if I wanted a hard stalking hunt, that is the one, but multiples are not an option.

I have taken a good eland in masailand, but feel if you want to hunt them in Tanzania, the Selous is a better place...but again, it's expensive, and as a 21 day animal, it's probably not a multiple hunt, but if you have the scratch, IMO, everyone should try the Selous once in their lives.

I have hunted eland a couple times with Mokore, both in Chewore and on the Save, and a multiple hunt with them should not disappoint, but I would ask one of the boys where they think the better hunt is, whether save, Sengwa, or Mozambique.

Lord Derby is a bucket list hunt for me.

But I have never hunted Eland as the primary target. They have always been targets of opportunity.

I think my next hunt will focus just on eland and everything else will be a target of opportunity.

I think a double rifle and a emphasis of walking is my way to a eland hunt,
