I went back a bit in the archives but did not really find anything definitive. In my case, I am taking my double in 450/400 and being ironsighted, I will use it on my 2(hopefully)Buff, maybe on the zebra if possible. My .318 will be for the other plainsgame and I figured, to be safe, 80 rounds for it and at least 50 for the double, 35 softs, 15 solids. My buddy is taking a .375 and a .300 mag and I told him at least 50 for each, more if possible. I don't want to get carried away, but if a scope craps and you have to resight, you want enough ammo to cover it and your regular hunting. What is the consensus of Y'all? Thanks in advance! Lee.

I am taking 50 rounds of .500 NE (40 Woodleigh SPs and 10 GS solids) and 70 rounds of .416 Rigby (Barnes TSX). I will confess that this exceeds the allowed 11 pounds though.

The limit is 5kg. You will have to weigh your ammo to figure out what your upper limit will be.

I am taking a 470 Mbogo and a 416 Taylor. I am just shy of 5kg with 40 of each.

Some countries put a cap on the number of rounds for each calibre as well. Where are you going?

Canuck, I am going to Tanzania w/PVT for a 10 day buff w/6 pg.

I carry two boxes per gun, but then I only carry one gun. If I'm hunting Buffalo / PG, I carry only the 375H&H. If I'm just hunting PG, I carry a 300WSM.

I've got a different theory than most. I don't shoot a full menu of game when I go to Africa. I've never shot more than two animals per trip. I figure that trophy fee savings will pay for another trip.

If weight is an issue (5kgs) then 60 round sof .318 should be plenty

Would you mind posting a picture of your arsenal? 450/400 and 318 is a wonderful combination IMO....

1 box for the double (14 solids, 6 softs), and the remainder for your bolt gun.

At the end of the hunt, leave your extra ammo in camp for the next fellow who wanders through with a 450/400 and .318 combo.

FWIW, I've packed 80 rounds for each of the two rifles I'm taking - .375 H&H , .458 Lott - 160 rounds: half soft points, half solids. I'm confident I won't use half of the ammo but I'm thinking that since these are popular calibers, I might leave a few boxes behind as gifts.

Geez, alot of you guys seem to carry enough ammo for a six month safari.

Last year, two elephants, three buff and a zebra and thirty rounds of DR ammo were enough. Didn't bring home much though.

Sixty rounds of 375H&H ammo were enough for a half dozen or so impala, a wildebeast, an eland, a kudu, two bushbuck, a waterbuck and a hyhena. Brought home lots of spare ammo.

This year its a go for six or seven elephants, a buff, a leopard and bait animals for the leopard and who knows. Sixty rounds for the DR and forty for the 375H&H and it weighs in right at 11 lbs.

U.S. law limits us to exporting 1000 rounds per hunting trip. But an airplane charter would be necessary to take that much.

Don't be so sure. I dealt with a "gentleman" with KLM in Houston who had an obvious disdain for hunters and firearms. Insisted on weighing ammo and checking everything out on my rifles. The prick didn't even know how a bolt rifle operated... asked me to show the rifle was unloaded... which I did... then how I would make the rifle "safe"... told Bozo to check the fact that the bolt was not in the gun and was packed in a special compartment in the case. I think his reply was "Oh, really".

You just never know...

Yes, I plan on leaving a little behind, some poor local may have a .318 languishing for lack of ammo! Better would be that I find him and buy it!! I am always of the mind that too much is about right, better safe than sorry. I am not a bad shot, but who knows, I may experience buck fever for the first time! I was getting ready to fax my Dutch consent forms in and needed to make a decision quickly on final amounts. Thanks for all of the feedback! Bwanamrm, Thanks for the heads up. Maybe I should reduce my ammo to half (80 rnds.). I know I won't even need that much.

I went back over my past 6 hunts and found that I averaged 2.25 rounds per elephant and 3.20 rounds per buff for my big guns these included insurance shots.. That didn't include any sight check rounds. On elephant hunts I take 30 rounds for my big rifle, 28 solids and two softs. The softs are kept for night time camp prowlers and if the unexpected chance for a buff materializes. It has happened twice in 5 elephant hunts. I don't spend much if anytime on plains game game hunting so usually take 30 rounds for my 375 H&H, 20 softs and 10 solids. I usually check with my PH and see if he needs any ammo, if so I'll bring a box or two for him.

I have repacked. 100 rounds total. 40 .458 Lott (20 soft,20 solids). 60 .375 H&H (40 soft,20 solids). Weighs 11 lbs. according to my bathroom scale.

That's cool data!

As a good friend of mine says.."It's not so much the anticipation of the hunt, but the amount of powder you burn while you are there!".

If I average 3.2 rounds per buff, and a couple to verify that the rifles are sighted in, I'll still have 65 rounds left over (out of the 80 rounds total that I am taking!).
