Schler .404 Magnum...
Hi,
Has anybody heard about this caliber?
It was made on a blown out .416 Rigby case -or did Rigby adapt the .404 Schler Magnum case...?

I know only about one original .404 Magnum Scler rifle in existence.

Would be a nice caliber i think.

Hi Alf,
You are as always the MAN to ask!
I find this caliber quite interesting.
Do you know anything about its performance?

Ken Stewart and I discussed the caliber quite a lot during the last weekends hunt in Limpopo.

Husky: I have a magazine where the 404 Schuler is studied in its full glory. Ill try to locate it and forward some data. The German for the calibre is something like 11.5 x 72 or whereabouts.
Its a very potent recipe, no doubt.

nainital,

Just a request - would you please consider forwardingit to Nickudu so that he could post it here and all of us could read it?

Thanks and good hunting!

nainital,
The 11,2x72 is another calibre and a quite potent one. There was also a 11,2x72R chambered in Schler double rifles with "Hercules" action. I think that the 11,2x72R is one of the most expensive collectors cartridges.

The .404 Schler Magnum is a .404 calibre necked up .416 Rigby case.

It would be interesting to read the 11,2x72 article anyway!

Husky: unfortunately I cant forward the data to Nick for publishing here. The magazine was Rifle of March 1998 and the article was written by Gil Sengel. Some excepts: "The 11.2 x 72 mm appeared about 1910, with the 12.7 x 70 mm following in the 1920s. Statistics on the 11.2 x 72 show a 401 grain bullet leaving the muzzle at 2.425 fps. Energy is, therefore, about 5.300 ft-lbs. Bullet diameter, by the way, is .440 inch. The owner of Star Custom Bullets, Bill Mc Bride, owns 2 original rifles, in both Schulers calibres. It should be noted that these were built on Mauser 1989 actions.
I own a too large already number of gun magazines, but cant send these to U.S.A., what with the present costs of shipping from so far away.

Im sorry, of course I meant Mauser 1898 actions.

I have seen Bills' rifle and it is indeed a rare beauty. He had spoken of selling it to a collector in the South and may have already done so. I will contact him (I am looking to purchase another of his "Africans") and see if he will allow me to photograph it.

Alf: Im the culprit, some way or other the 11.2x72 got mixed in the chat. The 404 Magnum seems to be a 10.75x70 if I guess right. Very interesting info, thanks. Do you have some data about velocity and energy?

I don't know much about the Schueler rifles, but a friend of mine has an original Schueler in 12.7x70 (the 500 jeffery) A very classic rifle that screams Africa. I shot it a few times, very nice functioning rifle and very traditional.

Why the heck did they rebate the rim of the parent Rigby case? The .404 Jeffery is a much better cartridge than that, even though there are no varmint bullets for the .404 Jeffery. No wonder this cartridge is deader than a dodo. It was stillborn, never had a chance.
