Guys,
FYI, I checked the SAA website last night for carriage of dangerous goods and noticed that they now publish that travellers are limited to 4 kgs of ammo per hunter and not the usual 5kgs.
Whether that'll be enforced, I don't know.

BwannaI've never been asked the weight of my ammo. Has anyone else, or has someone actually had it weighed? I know I had to be over last year when I took a .458 Lott, .375 H&H and a 30-06 to Zim. I wonder, since I leave Las Vegas on Delta and then transfer to SAA with bags transferring directly on, if they don't think to requestion about the ammo when I'm getting on the SAA flight.

llamapackerI have had my ammo weighed once when checking in on Delta, before connectig with SAA. (This was a couple years ago. I was under the 5kg limit, so no problem. But I was over 4kg!) I was actually surprised that a ticket agent knew the limits. On all my other trips, no one has questioned the weight of ammo. On the other hand, I don't usually get that close to the limit, so they have no reason to check.
When traveling with my family, because of the total weight, on occassion we have to split the ammo into different bags (each under 5kg) which is good practice in case they were to loose the suitcase anyway. When I travel alone, I just put all the ammo in one bag. For a normal two gun safari, the only way you should approach the limit is if you are taking shotgun ammo. That can add up in a hurry! 40 rounds of .416 and 40 rounds of .300 will still be under the 5kg limit, as I found out last month.

PanchoI've never had a problem with a ticket agent but the something for brains "Thousands Standing Around (TSA)" duds love to pick thru your stuff. Been hearing more and more about them getting caught stealing from luggage too. I probably wouldn't mind if I thought they were doing any good but their eye wash doesn't cut it with me. If I unjustly offend any TSA's out there, I will apologize. I doubt that will be the case.

mustbhuntnOn our last trip I took the wife, kids, and four rifles. No one seemed to care about the ammo at all. However, on our first trip when I only had one rifle, they let us into SA without checking but on the way out they weighed the ammo and rummaged through all our bags. Go figure.

Russ GouldYou just have to run into an anti at the ticket counter and your life will be a misery. There is no need to take more than 4kgs...unless you are going shotgunning in which case you should plan on buying ammo locally.

L. David KeithTSA personnel has been my problem, not my domestic carrier. 11 lbs and he weighed it. Nothing was said until I left. Then I get called back to the ticket counter. He watches and grins from a distant corner. Just being a jerk because he can. 4kgs of ammo is another jack around by SAA. They can't keep their ass on straight. Every time I fly with them it's something else. They have changed my upcoming flight 3 times already. Now I want them to move my departure back a few days and it's "oh, we're overbooked!" Well, how about giving me a bulkhead seat since you KEEP THOSE EMPTY! 4kgs of ammo is another nail in the coffin. When will it be "only 10 rounds" we're allowed to take? What if you have scope problems and need the extra ammo? Lose some/have some stolen? Call, email or write letters to SAA and complain. Without American Hunters SAA would have so many empty seats they could use a Cessna to bring their clientele to Africa. Keep quiet and watch what happens. This pisses me off! LDK

4 kilos is realistically enough for the typical DG hunt...BUT one good afternoon hunting that unexpected Baboon troop / zeroing back in a scope that got whacked, etc...Will cut severly into 8.2 pounds real quick!!!
That previous 11 pounds (that seemd small) looks pretty good now, eh!

(BTW, spent some 6 months many years ago in NM (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth) and liked everything - except you locals telling me " It's a dry heat!" - when I knew I was being baked like a muffin in the oven!

I've been asked about my ammo weight every time (3 trips to Africa, two airlines each time..so about 6 times), but my ammo was only weighed once. I did my homework, so it was no issue.
Also, in DAR they counted my unspent ammo on the way out, but not the way in.
