Well I am sure that is not a problem for most of us common folk, as a Rolex is not in our price range.

450 FullerFrom combat in Vietnam through regularly-attended military parachute jumps and SCUBA school, Alaska moose hunts-- a 1680 Rolex
red Submariner has lasted 50 very tough years. There may be slightly more accurate digital watches, but for less than what it now costs for 2 boxes of 416 Rigby or 375 H&H-I own a 1971 lifetime watch that goes everywhere and endures everything.
As Filson states: "Might As well have the best".

MJinesA 1680 Red Submariner sporting a top hat acrylic crystal . . . absolutely iconic. There is no finer example of an adventurer’s time piece.

WoodhitsI wear a Pepsi Rolex GMT in the states but my "third world" watch is a Tudor Black Bay with a NATO band.

MikeESubmariner master race checking in here.
Why own it if you can't wear it? I do confess pushing up my sleeve a bit in certain RSA environs though.
Quick story - there is a certain jeweler, that, if you attended and passed the local Army dive school, and are now a combat diver kinda guy, will sell you a Sub at his cost. One of my friends, on passing through the school and graduating, goes to get his watch.
Said jeweler is telling him all about the watch, you know this thing is waterproof to over 300 meters, thats almost a thousand feet. Tommy looks at him and says " sir, if you ever see me, wearing this watch, at 300 meters, suspect foul play immediately.
Priceless.

OngweThe more I think about it, I think something like a Hamilton Field watch would be best. I like the Bronze.
Fairly plain so it looks like it belongs on safari and you can save the bling for the conventions.
Can be had for less than a grand.
I like to wear a watch when I go into a leopard blind and usually it's a cheap Casio that I can give to a tracker when it's all over.

This one started out many, many years ago with a plastic case, which was broken twice so i had them put it in a steel case. That's been 25 years or so and has been a great watch.

swmmyself and my wife have just been unfortunate when trying to find a Rolex that will actually keep decent time. after many years and various brands, we both now wear Rado watches. perfect accuracy via several watches.

eagle27Never been too concerned about any particular watch to wear as long as it is fully waterproof, withstanding the elements in icy rivers, seawater and hot pools. Had this Wenger Swiss Army Knife (SAK) design watch for 26 years now only needing a new battery every so often.
It has a stainless steel back with a stainless or nickel finish on the brass body and bezel ring. Still has original glass and keeps perfect time but is showing wear from constant use and the Swiss cross emblem is well faded.
It has been in some hard country under all sorts of conditions and never missed a beat.

470EDDYWearing a SubMariner, or worse any GOLD Rolex while traveling in any 3rd World Country is inviting trouble, including having your arm cut off to steal your watch!! While cruising around Africa for the last three months, every port, we are warned to leave gold jewelry and all valuables onboard in your Suite safe!! We do this, including wedding rings, and my wife's Gold Rolex, and my ancient Omega Flightmaster.
I take along my LumiNox for hunting and shore excursions.
The issue I think is most important is to NOT create sun flashes from a watch crystal that may scare off game or point to your location during a stalk!!
I use a very small GPS for dropping pins, and retracing tracks on hikes after game. Of course, it also has local and GMT time on it as well...

crbutlerI’m into Africa time when I’m on safari.
No watch at all.
Sun is up? Hunting time.
Sun is down? Sleeping (or blind) time.
What day of the week is it again?
The PH will keep track of when I have to leave…

lavacaMark,
Agree with you if you have to wear a watch.
Arjun,
Back when I wore a watch, I wore it with the face on the inside of my wrist, not the outside. Prevented flashing.

Absolutely and also more difficult to snatch from the wrist.

lavacaEasier to check the time as well without a lot of motion.

desert dogMarathon GPQ-D. Rugged military watch (used by DOD) that can really take a beating. Quality Swiss manufacturer, tritium illumination, standard & 24-hour time, Date, and very low profile.
It's on the smaller side, so won't get in the way during a hunt and won't bother you in Zambezi Valley heat.
It doesn't attract unwanted attention and You will find no better hunting watch for under $350.

The only thing this one is missing is a GMT hand, for pilots on flight plans, or telling time at home so you know when NOT to call or text back home!!
I'm using mine right now while cruising...

dogcatHonestly, outside of Saeed's rants on CME and Baldry along with the political forum, this is one of the wierdest threads I have seen on AR....
Wrist watches? Really? Just ask your tracker what time it is - He will say - daytime....
Good grief...
15 February 2025, 07:13
lavacadogcat,
I agree. Only time I've needed a watch is hunting cats on a big concession. And needing to figure out when to quit doing what I'm doing or following what I'm following to get to a blind over a bait a couple or more hours away.

Jayhawker2022I am hard on watches for some reason. I just seem to bash them to death.
I have only worn a watch on a few of my safari days but what I wear is a Timex Ironman. If it gets destroyed it’s like a $35 loss and I shed no tears.
The Rolex Submariner stays at home in the safe and only comes out for fancy occasions.

crackermanIts the one you take that makes memories.
I am taking my Tudor Ranger and the Oris Bronze Big Crown the wife got me. Both will be part of my frist safari story.
Watches tell time for me, as QA guy yeah vacation or not I want to know the exact hour and minute.
When I look at the watch I will be wearing I will remember the stories it was there for. Safari wise it will be which animal I shot.
My Ranger has been on fishing, hunting, vacations, hell even medical runs working the ambulance.
Watches with scratches and dings have stories, no good field or dive watch should live in a box worried about getting scratches.

Hear, hear. Just like the worn bluing and scratches on a rifle, the patina on a watch used and enjoyed only enhances its attractiveness and tells a story of life well lived.
