anyone ever hunt with peter barnard in the chewore area? considering this buff 7 day vs a 7 day buff hunt in the masai with adam clements...my first safari the hunt would be in september....any and all advice appreciated

I have had the pleasure of conversing with Mr. Barnard on 2 occasions. He is a very pleasant fellow with a fine reputation among Zim professional hunters. His grandfather was a notorious elephant poacher, and there is a very interesting book about his life entitled "Ivory Trail" or something like that by author T.V. Bulpin.

I can't address Zim or hunting with Adam, but I have hunted the area Adam has now. I had a great hunt and my wife and I really enjoyed meeting the Masai and learning about their culture. In years past, the buffalo hunting in Adam's area was sensitive to the availability of water. I understand he is working on that. I shot the buffalo in my avitar from his area in August and saw several larger.

I hunted in Chewore for 15 days a few years back. It is pure wilderness but because of that the game densities are not high although I shot a representative buffalo and a leopard. It is quite hilly and sometimes the walks long. It will be quite a bit cheaper hunt than Masailand. I do feel though that you can't be too picky in Chewore in 7 days. You probably should shoot the first decent bull you see. In Masailand you might have the luxury of looking over several good bulls before pulling the trigger.

Well I have hunted both Chewore and Tanzania (Selous) with Adam's company and I can recommend both areas and Adam's organization highly.

If you hunt with Peter, I beleive you will hunt out of the Big5 camp. It is very nice. You can also do some fishing for Tiger fish and hunt in or along the river for waterbuck, bushbuck, croc, hippo, ducks, geese, etc.

I have hunted there twice and had a great hunt both times. I will hunt there again in 2006. I have taken trophy quality buff, eland, impala, kudu, warthog, waterbuck, zebra, bushbuck, grysbuck, klipspringer out of there. Also passed on hippo, croc, sable, leopard. They are all there. If you hunt there, you will be dodging elephant each day. It is truly a wild place.

Here are photos of the buff I took on each trip. Regardless of size, the hunt and stalking multiple buffalo in the thick brush really is something to experience. I have also heard that Peter is a first rate PH.

I can vouch for the fact that Chewore is a great Safari experience. I'm sure hunting with Adam would be great as well. The most important thing is that you are going. So, just flip a coin! Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!
