I am looking to purchase a rifle to take to Africa in 2007. Having read as much as possible on the subject of rifles, it seems that the CZ 550 is a dependable, reasonably priced rifle. I understand that the problem with the stock splitting has been addressed in the new models by the addition of a pin. Also the action can be smoothed bya gunsmith. Any suggestions or comments on the CZ 550 ?

I really like the CZ big bores and I think they are well thought of. I have my eye on a CZ 550 Safari in 375 H&H.

I am a contented cz 550 safari owner and I like there products. If you geta .416 get it bedded and have 1 or 2 crossbolts added.

I am getting a second cz .416 and it is the American stocked model. I will not shoot it until it's bedded etc. However if I hate the wood I will shoot it and hopefully it will crack and I might get a nicer piece of timber under warranty

Also get your smith to check the feeding and smooth the action if you want. IMHO there agreat base for a big game gun and have many good features for there price.

I love the .416 Rigby calibre as well it's my favourite.

CTurk3, for you or anyone else interested, and located in N. California, I was in a shop this week in Sacramento and they had a CZ 416 Rigby marked down to $750 or so. This is more than $100 off the regular retail, something you don't often see on the big bores. It was tempting, but I've had my 375 for less than a year, and no new trips planned, yet!

I have a CZ american in .416R on order. I agree that there is some work required after purchase, but should provide an excellent rifle.

I have a CZ550 375 that has taken two buffalo, 7 species of plains game, a bunch of wild hogs in Georgia and it has remained a reliable accurate rifle.

Is your 550 the "American" or the "safari" model?

My CZ 416 Rigby drove me mad with pushfeeding problems despite trips to two reputable gunsmiths. After minimal work my Ruger is flawless and I was very confident with it against ele and buff last year. Charlie.

I'm leaning toward the American Safari model, while my oldest son thinks the "other" model is a better choice. Any comments?

I have just gotton asecond cz .416 and could not get the lux model so had to settle for the safari.........have not handled it yet so can't comment but I would say I am fond of the lux but each person may differ. If you have access to both I reckon go and feel which one suits you best. My other cz's are lux models...........I like there slim feel at the forend.
