JP577What about the new Mauser M-98?
First, thank you for the information on the Steyr Mannlicher. You probably have saved me $$$$ worth of disappointment.
Before I put my eyes on the SM, I was offered a used Mauser 98. This is a new production rifle made by Mauser Waffen, Germany. Price aside, what do you think of this rifle? Accuracy, build quality, reliability and durability?
I know I couldn't go wrong with them, but I just want to make sure that I'm really buying a good gun, not just a historical name.
Thanks

PSmithI understand it is a pretty good rifle, although it seems a bit spendy.
If you like the Mauser 98 action, have you looked into Empire Arms rifles? They make a very good modern Mauser-type action.

390ishI don't think you will hear anyone say anything bad about an Empire rifle.

404WJJefferyPrice Aside? They are very good rifles - but way overpriced when sold new.
There are lots of M03s around in Africa calibers for a lot less, and they take down/switch barrel, which is good for traveling.
Are you comfortable telling us what the caliber, price and condition of the 98 you are looking at?

It's 9.3x64 in near mint condition. Few small marks on the stock, but the original owner had the safety reversed to fire in the rear position, and inserted an oval with his initials in the stock. Price is still being negotiated, but is around 1/2 of what a new one costs.
