A hippo in the Kafue National Park on Sunday killed a 39-year-old fisherman after it attacked him while he was fishing and ripped his body into two parts.
This is yet another victim of the increasing incidence of human-animal conflict.
Both police and Monze Mission Hospital management confirmed the
attack and named the deceased as Philly Masanso of Nyimba fishing camp who was killed while fishing on his dug-out canoe around 09:00 hours.
“That is when a hippo hit his canoe and it capsized. The hippo ripped his
abdomen, cut the throat and he died on the spot. It had to take the efforts
of his friends to retrieve the body which was ripped into two parts,”
said police sources.
Last week, a man in Eastern Province accidentally burnt down his house as he tried to chase off elephants that were eating his sweet potato crop.
And police in Monze have arrested a 40-year-old man identified as Edson Cheelo for allegedly killing his father Timothy Cheelo aged 80.
Edson is alleged to have hit his father on the head continuously after a drinking spree.
Police said Edson killed his father after returning from a drinking
spree with his friends around 21:00 hours and was apprehended in the
early hours of Sunday by police officers.
“He hit his father with a wooden object on the head and broke the skull. He bled so much that he died on the spot. We have arrested the culprit who is in our custody pending investigations and appearance in court,”
disclosed sources.
