Nice Elephant, and off hand with a 700 N.E. adds to the memory of what must have been a great hunt, congratulations.

Congratulations. Sounds as if you hunted and merited that heavy ivory.

A lesson learned re big bore rifles and rests from my first elephant: Had a handy stump to brace my barrel hand against. Caused me to fail to grip the barrels tightly enough. The first shot (rifle is a 500/450 Nitro) saw the barrels almost jump out of that hand! Follow up shots were off hand. I'll still use a rest if one is handy, but I've learned a lesson.

700 nitro
the load used is as follows

searcy brass trimmed to 3.499" + or - .001"

160 grains of rel 15 with a 1 1/8" hard foam wad with a peice of note pad paper under the wad to stop a dry chemical reaction between the wad and powder

the powder was causing the wad to shrink 1/8" causing air space big no no cause it drops the pressure and lowers the point of impact.

the load is compressed wich is very good trust me velosity is just over 2000 fps at the muzzel with the 1000 grain fmj

the primer was a fed 215 mag primer since then i have gone to the fed 215 gold match its the same as a 215 just with better componets

i must stress this load loves crompression rel 15 in the 700 is very finicky but as long as there is no airspace there will be no hangfire and everthing will be great

accuracy is great as well off of a rest 6 shot groups 3 from each barrel into a 2 1/2" square are easy at a distance of 50 yards i stress this is off a rest.

off hand it opens a bit to 4- 4 1/2" at 50 yards.

Dang, 700, you're not going to hand this one down?
All the trouble you went to to get it and just one hunt?

Surely there is a buffalo over there that would require that double rifle.

700, did you really leave that 500 in Botswana? Be careful because Butch might charge you more next time if he knows you are not going to keep it!

Frankly speaking, if I owned your .700 double rifle, I would sell it and go on 2 more elephant hunts with the cash.
