The hunting season is just around the corner and the first shots are soon to be fired. The rains are over and the PH’s are now gathering at their favourite water holes. A few I noticed have put on weight and so have their stories. Town is buzzing with convoys of cruisers loaded to the hilt with diesel and salt, decorated with rifle racks and newly covered hunting seats. Guns have been oiled and cartridges polished. Chains, baiting wire and kilometres of rope have still to be purchased. Trackers appear from the bush and look thin, the Chefs have faired better. Everyone has the clap or worse but they are a cheerful bunch and keen to taste meat again. Their axes have been honed I noticed and I need to add penicillin to my list.
Go well AR, keep the sun to your back and the wind in your face.

only.375H&HAndrew, what a way to describe the beginning of another hunting season from PH point of view.
Do not know way but after reading your post, my .375H&H is on the bench and cartridges been polished.
Good hunting season to all AR and friends.

You made Peter clean is key board, but you have made me take my .375 to the bench.
Good hunting season to all AR and fellow hunters world wide.

Bill CI can picture it now! This is one of the reasons why I enjoy driving in, the loading of the cruiser, gathering of supplies, picking up of the trackers....especially in the beginning of the season when everybody is fresh and anxious to get back in the bush.
In contrast, come the end of the season, everyone has something else on their mind (and I'll resist the easy pun).

Best of luck this season Andrew, and I look fwd to your continued tales and perspectives. All the best, Bill

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Welcome to the forum Mr. Nganga.
Has your name anything to do with some potent weed that certain social misfits are known to smoke with great relish?

umshiniwamBest wishes for the season Andrew.
I am fairly new on this forum and have thoroughly enjoyed your anecdotes and insights from the Professional Hunter's perspective. It has been great to put a "voice", so to speak, to the face that I have seen in books & magazines.
Happy hunting!

Mr. Frederick,
And which weed would you be refering to?

Steve AhrenbergMr. Frederick
I spoke this morning with my "Bush Pharmacist" and he wish's to correct, for the record, your weed is actually Mbange or Daka. So please be careful as not to try and smoke the buffalo beans.

Salient advice and duly noted, I think you may have solved a perennial problem.

Fairgame:
Is the penicillin for your staff---or because of your recent trip to Denmark?
