yukon deltaNo doubt. He's even got 5 legs.
Check out his tusk. If he sneezes, it's going through the passenger's head.

I didn't go elephant hunting this year. That picture scares the pee out of me and reminds me why I love hunting the giant buggers so much! It is a thrill to be amongst those monsters....

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.
-Seth Peterson

gerrys375All of you old Africa hands are perfectly aware of the sheer size of the African elephant - but let me tell you that to this first time visitor to the African bush (1993)I was absolutely dumbfounded -and awed by the first African elephant ( a matriarch) I saw near sundown. The distance was about 65 yards and she and (what the PH told me were young)suddenly -were there appearing out of the bush, Hazy figures - until she mounted what my PH said was a "mock charge". I heard the screaming and saw the flaring of the ears. Afterwards, I told him (truthfully) if that was a "mock charge" that I never wanted to see a real one. This happened on my second day in Africa and I often saw elephant afterwards and, always, felt a gut deep feeling of fear. I shot a Cape buff at about 35 yards who was turning at me -but it was the elephant who put the fear of God in me. Fact. I always have wondered how I would behave if I was actually to shoot at one. I certainly respect the guys who stand and put a bullet into one that is facing them. And that's a fact, too.

Perhaps you will get a chance someday. It's difficult to describe the feeling. Some choose to never repeat it and others vow to return again and again.

I think I did want to "test" myself against an elephant - but I never got back to Africa (to my deep regret)because of the pressures of business and circumstances. Today, I'm simply too old to do so. (I just reached 78 and while I'm grateful to the good Lord that I have all my wits and most of the machinery still functions, I just don't have the inclination any more to try to match myself against an elephant. I guess its a case of a hunter "slowing down" and calling it a day)
11 May 2008, 01:50
yukon deltaWell, you have seen them in the wild so there is no need to feel regret. That is more than most people will ever see.

ghundwanShakari -
If you good you are good the picture was taken in the Hluhluwe/Umfolozi. It was a Swiss tourist and his sister.
As the elephant left them the driver got out the car and had a smoke

Damage to rented car R7000 (not bad)
12 May 2008, 18:13
shakariI thought so! - It looks to me like area between Hluhluwe and the game capture bomas at Umfolozi - Many years ago, during some good rains, I watched an entire herd of Elephants sit down on their asses like dogs and slide down one of those mountains.
If I hadn't seen it, I wouldn't have believed it!

R7000 for the roof isn't bad I guess..... how much to clean the seats?

I think I would be gunning the motor and getting out of there.
