GanyanaLioness's are about 2/3 to half the size of a male. They usually have attitude! On a stalk in hunt, the male will invariably run as soon as you are sighted and one of the bitches will come and give you uphill.
You do get mainless males though that look like GIANT females. Andre van Eeden shot a mainless male on his farm (when he still had it) which was killing cattle- Weighed 580lbs and skull was 27". 30 seconds after the shot he wished he had put up with the stock loss for another week and found a client to shoot it!

MacD37Though the lioness is smaller than the male, I'd prefere to hunt the lioness in a tracking type hunt! The lioness is more dangerous under tracking conditions. If they are pushed they will come for you, and since the females travel together, and usually have youngsters in tow, they can get quite cheeky, and the chance of charge is almost a given, but the chance of a multiple charge is likely as well, when pushing the females! If danger is your game, then the girls are the way to go, when tracking. On bait, the male is the target every time!
All this is hear-say, from my PH friends, as I do not, personally, have a lion of either sex!I can't seem to leave the Cape Buffalo alone long enough to hunt lion!

Michael RobinsonSmaller, yes.
But plenty big enough to crush your skull and its contents with one bite, or to break your neck with one smashing bash of a fore paw.
And much, much, more aggressive.
I did see a huge female near Chiz park last year and she was bigger than the two males that were with her. She was not afraid of us and we stayed in the landcruiser and drove within 40 yards of her. She was eating a baboon and acted like she didnt want to share it. I could have shot her but I will always remember her as she was leading a troop of eight lions.

GatehouseThanks
Teh comment int he moviwas somthing ike "the femaes get even bigger" or something. I din't believe it, as very few females get as large as males that I can see. But I am limited to NA hunting, of course.
Are there many lions left with the big manes? Or are they mostly gone?
