Most slang/colloquialisms have a fairly obvious root...others not so.

I have always wondered where 'china' came from...you know - 'Howzit my china, I skeem you should cruise over to my pozzie for a dop bru'.

Yes, I suspect it is a corruption of "bloke", but also with the Afrikaans "ou" (pronouced "Oh", plural "ouens"-- "oh-ens") which means the same thing, i.e. guy, bloke, fellow, etc.

I heard a rumor that it could also mean like "oak" as in an oak tree... "solid as an oak". haha!

'Blokes' seems to be more logical.

Sounds plausible...I was thinking along the lines of 'ou' as well....AR cultural linguistics forum!

"Outjie" is a well known afrikaans word(pronounced "okie")Refering to someone young or small.I'd guess "oke" is the 'maturer' version of outjie.

China is shortened Cockney rhyming slang "China Plate" rhymes with "mate".

Foe "Oke" it's a toss-up between "Outjie" and "Bloke"

Used as in: "Howzit my china, lissen me and some of the okes are off to watch the cricket, are you bok?"

Only reason I chimed in was because I heard this term in the Ian Nyschens interview in Buzz Charlton's DVD. Went back and viewed it again and I got it wrong. He said "then this oke hit a rock..." so within the context I thought he was referring to a canoe. Obviously he was referring to the oke piloting the boat.

Now, more importantly, did Leo DiCaprio really make a complete mess of it "Blood Diamond"?

Best attempt ever from Hollywood IMO even got the slang down quite well...he even said 'bru' a number of times!

You can try Colloquial Afrikaans by Bruce Donaldson. There is another one on Amazon as well, although they speak very slowly on the CD. Coll Afrikaans has a more normal speech rythme. I also picked up a couple of dictionaries. One with Skookboek in the title seems to be more complete. There is a website as well that is free listed below

For Afrikaans, I use CDs by Teach Yourselfand I play it when I'm in the car. Drives my kids nuts. I also try speaking a few new phrases whenever I make a telephone call to Namibia or South Africa.

For German, I use Barron's and Instant Immersion CDs and I also try to speak a few words to my German friends.

For Swahili, I just have phrasebooks by Lonely Planet and Dover Say-It Series.

Here's my understanding of the above:

full on: right on

porsie: house

dop: drink

dumpy: little brown beer bottle

spook and diesel: a mixed drink of light-colored liquor and cola.

blotto: drunk

bos: absolutely insane

Another distinct possibility - 'Oke' could be a corruption of the Afrikaans 'outjie' or 'little guy'. Whichever way, it's very much slang - don't fret too much over it

The best Afrikaans phrase that CChunter the Big Viking knows loves and we hear a lot when we go out to local spots is "Speel jy rugby ?" - Do you play rugby ?

The ladies like a big hugable man. And when he answers them back in Afrikaans in an accent it either means a hug from girls or a free drink from guys. Always fun.

Oke is a misspelling of a term, regarded in my realm with great affection, love and respect - the correct term is - "Okie"

It means a person of high moral character, superb athletic ability, great looking women, and wealth beyond your dreams.

An opposite term would be "Texan" and we don't say that in our state as it is considered a hate crime......
