Safari-Hunt308 Warbird
Has any of you heard of theis wildcat before ?
From what I got told it pushes a 180 grain bullet at 3900 fps.
Is this just a a competion rifle or a beanfield rifle ? On what case was this wildcat based I can't think of anything smaller than a 460 case to produce such velocities.

DB BillThis is a cartridge developed by John Lazzeroni...he makes custom rifles based on his proprietary line of cartridges.....his web-site is
www.lazzeroni.comHe lists the ballistics for each of his cartridges and as I remember the Warbird (.308) can reach 3900 fps with a 130gr bullet...not the 180gr.
I have two Lazzeroni rifles and both of mine reach the velocities cited on the web-site.

Safari-HuntThanx DB BIll for correcting and helping me in the right way.

Zero DriftS-H - Bill knows a lot about Lazzeroni. The Warbird was a stab at the .30-378. Just like the Weatherby cartridge, barrel life is not exactly what I would call long. Throat erosion is horrendous not to mention recoil.

This is why I dislike overpower caliber, like this caliber.

Safari-HuntAfter going trough the Lazzeroni site I saw a moster .416 400 grains @ 2777 fps Ouch both to the animal and shoulder !!!
Not that I would ever want a rifle like that I was just wondering about it after I heard about the warbird.

<Mike Dettorre>By the way both Bill and I are in the customer results section. As I recall Bill is the only one listed for a Hellcat and I am in there with and eland and some other stuff.

Safari-HuntMike,
Yep I did see your photos
Except for velocity are you guys enjoying the rifles or is it a bit harsh on the shoulder ??
With the speeds you produce I'm sure only barnesX would work or do you guys use some other bullets as well for game ?

<Mike Dettorre>1st thing I would say is I love the cartridge my is the short action 338 called an 8.59mm Galaxy.
I load towards the bottom end of the scale. 2810 fps for a 210 grn Nosler partition in a 23 inch bbl.
I have develped loads up to 2935 fps. Those were a little to sharp in recoil but the most accurate.
I was very fortunate that my rifle is extremely accurate. Built on a Rem 700 (yes my god its a push feed) oh and uh oh it has a detachable box magazine with a 23 inch Hart stainless bbl.
Most accurate loads is 70 grn of h4350 and hornday 200 grn bullets 2875 shoot sub 1/3 inch 3 shot group
The my low end nolser 210 load is 69.5 grns of h4350 and is a sub 2/3 inch 3 shot group.
72 grns of h4350 turned in 4/10 inch groups.
Things I would do differently. Have it bulit on a Praire Gun Works Action.
The Model 70, rem 700, ruger 77 just barely have enough room for cartridge head. Also my detachable magazine only holds two rounds.
I think you can egt 3 down and 1 up the spout un the Praire Gun works Action.

DB BillThe comment about being a bit over-bore for the WarBird are probably true but you need to remember these are specialized hunting rifles and aren't made to take to the range and impress your friends. Additionally, the cost of rebarreling a custom rifle isn't all that expensive when you consider everything else.
With respect to the Lazzeroni line I don't much care for the original designs as they are more powerful than I can handle....I like the "short" cases like the Patriot (.308) which readily exceeeds the .300 WinMag ( by a lot in my rifle) and the HellCat (.375) which John doesn't list anymore.....I can approach 2600 fps with the 300gr Nosler in my 23" barrel but recoil, even with my Vais brake, is stout because of the light weight of the rifle. It is much easier to handle down around 2525fps. Accuracy on both rifles is what you might expect out of a custom rifle using quality components....welll under moa.
