I just finished Ray Atkinson's Cape Buffalo
I just finished Ray Atkinson's Cape Buffalo
Ray wanted to mount his latest buffalo.
So I mounted the skin and horns for him. I wanted to not only do a good job but also include some character.
I think it turned out great and captured not only the character of the buff but also of Ray.
Will post a pic soon.

Use Enough GunVery creative. Is he sticking his tongue out at you? It also looks like he's got a cataract on that right eye. . . . Maybe we can recommend a good eye doctor.

prof242Actually, I thought he had that look of, "Who just passed gas?" Maybe a match was lit, an explosion occurred, thus causing the slight anomalies in the mount?

Excellent! Looks like it must have required some hard work to patch up the skin when that 105mm shell exited his neck! Is he sucking on a grapefruit?

PeterHold it! Is that hair I see on his boss? This is NOT an old duggaboy. Ray would NEVER have shot this. I don't believe this for a minute. This thread is a HOAX!
Having said that, the picture does give new meaning to the phrase "a face that only a mother could love".

GraftonA little duct tape and black spray paint, it will be as good as new.

All kidding aside, it pains me to see mounts like this. What is the story behind it? I am sure it was a great memory for someone who is now long gone. Someday all of our mounts will have a similar fate as they will never have the same meaning to anyone but the original owner.
Pictures like this always remind me that we are only here for a short time. Always write a brief description on the back of your mounts, this way in a hundred years when someone finds your buffalo in a barn they will know the who, when & where.

AtkinsonGood job Willie, it matches the decor of my house, and it may in fact be older than me, hard to say since I don't look my age but then again neither does the buffalo, were both older than we look unfortunatly!!
I will hang it on the North wall or at least what looks like the North wall, its caved in a bit, but the hunting business has taken the path of the housing industry and I'm a little behind of repairs...

Jerry HuffakerI caught you Will, you didn't mount that buffalo, That is actually the first buffalo Ray killed when he was 16 years old, and since he is now 108 yrs old that makes the mount 92 yrs old.

eyedocI just slung a wisecrack at Ray on another thread and then I open this one to see him getting a beating and now I feel guilty of "piling on".

We seldom get to choose
But I've seen them go both ways
And I would rather go out in a blaze of glory
Than to slowly rot away!

Michael RobinsonIs that the buff that Atkinson claimed to have shot thirteen times and then burned to death in a Tanzanian grass fire?
Pretty realistic, I'd say. I'm going to have to do some re-assessing.
