A Kenya Wildlife Service ranger is nursing head injuries following a lion attack at the Maneaters in Tsavo on Monday night.
Taita Taveta police commander Richard Bitonga said the officers were guarding a tent at the landing site for President Uhuru Kenyatta during his inspection tour of the Standard Gauge Railway.
"The officers were guarding the tent on Monday night when one of the KWS rangers was attacked by a lion. The officer sustained head injuries," Bitonga told the Star on the phone yesterday.
He said the officer was rescued from the lion by his colleagues who shot at it.
"The officer was rushed to St Joseph Hospital at Ikanga where he is admitted," Bitonga said.
The police boss warned the incident could be signalling a return of the Man-eaters lions of the Tsavo witnessed in 1898.
"The lion could be an offspring of the man-eating lions of Tsavo. We urge those constructing the SGR to take precaution at the Tsavo River area," he said.
The man-eating Tsavo lions killed many Indian construction workers on the Kenya-Uganda Railway at Tsavo River bridge
The lions killed more than 135 people according to the book, The Man Eaters of Tsavo'.
John Patterson, British supervisor of the rail project shot the two lions in December 1898.
