gunnyIvan did a great job on that one. Its amazing how many brain shots are blown on elephant. Thats why if its a trophy bull the first one goes in the shoulder. At that point then either shoot again for the heart or try a brain. Some say its more ethical to brain em but if thats the case we should be braining everything from deer to dikers. On eight elephants I have only brained two but it was very spectacular.

Is there any detailed info on the Taylor rifle that was used in the said production, which unfortunately I have not seen?
ie Who it was bought from, calibre, associated paper work to validate provenance, etc.

Charles_HelmI've erased the show but it was an older article about the rifle in question. Maybe someone else here still has the program to find out which one.
In any event, the gist was that the provenance was well established.

eezridrI suspect they will repeat the show in short order.
They used to present a episode up to three times a week on the Outdoor channel. Sunday afternoon, early Saturday afternoon and 6.00 am on Thursday morning (USA central time). I believe it is only on Sunday afternoon now.
It was a pretty good episode with details on the rifle and its authenticity.

MuvhimiThe primary ethic for any PH is to see to it that animal is killed quickly and cleanly and if it means the PH puts in a back up/insurance shot to achieve this then so be it. Good on you Ivan.
BTW I hunted with the same client and rifle the year before and he made a perfect frontal brain shot at a Bull elephant at about 9 yards. It was great shooting in my book.

i have never had a client lose an elephant and i have backed up on many - if you want to attempts a frontal brainshot and you dont want backup be prepared to perhaps go home without.
i dont ever allow my backup shot to diminish an experience we are paid as professionals to ensure the ethical collecting of trophies while keeping our people safe in the field ...
allowing an elephant to run off wounded when i know i could have backed up and stopped it is equally unethical.
either way it was an awesome elephant , the gentleman has booked to hunt with me this year and next and i am sure we will have a great time out there ...
on a sidenote it was a great wonder to carry the rifle of such a great elephant hunter as pondoro taylor and to know that that rifle is still doing what its meant to do is awesome ...

Gun Digest and is supposedly called

They also showed a 1965 letter signed by John Taylor describing the rifle.

crbutlerI've always told the PH that if he feels the need to shoot, he better do it.
That said, I am a bit disappointed in myself if I have made them feel that need to shoot.
It happened once for me, with my first Buffalo. I don't know, but it may become needed again; if so I hope the PH shoots.
I don't care about losing the Trophy Fee for a wounded animal- that's my mistake. But its not good to leave a wounded animal around to risk someone else getting hurt, most likely some poor local villager who doesn't have a rifle or a PH or good medivac....

Idaho Sharpshooterhere's an option to consider: Client shoots a nice bull, client shoots the bull again. PH does not fire a finishing shot. Elephant runs off. Seven hours later in 120-degree, 99% humidity jungle Elephant comes out of nowhere and stomps client to death while PH is killing him. What do YOU tell the grieving widow? I didn't shoot because I wanted to give the client every opportunity to kill the Elephant himself. My ego isn't nearly that big. If I screw up the shot, you shoot while I am reloading my Searcy .470 NE double.
I congratulate Ivan Carter for how he handled the situation. The client approved, he rebooked for this year.
I just wish I made enough $$$ to hunt tuskers with Ivan and have Dave film it!!

Rick RTAA is a great show and that episode was better than most.
If I invested the money, sweat and emotion in an elephant hunt only to shoot it twice and see it run away, I'd be praying for a lightning strike, earthquake or volcano to stop him. They're big enough animals that a team effort would be a good plan IMHO.
