GanyanaCustom Ammo makers USA
Hi
Got a client comming out with an old rifle. Doesn't reload and needs some rather obscure ammo.
Having a 'senior moment' and cannot remember the name of the custom ammo maker I have used Before John S...?
If anybody has any Ideas I would appreciate it. I can give the loading data, and RWS still make the cases (occasionally) and Woodleigh the right size bullets, but I am not going to try getting dies and componants to load 100 rounds for a cartridge I will probably never see again - But he is going to need more in the USA over the next few years as he has fallen in love with an old drilling.

MikeBurkeSuperior Ammo has been around for a while.
I have never used them, but have always heard their reputation is good.

larryshoresI have used Superior in the past. Apparently, they have been sold . The prices on 500 NE target loads more than doubled since the sale. Some friends of mine are complaining that the quality has gone down.
There is also Massaro Ballistic Labs. I got a single box of a test load from them. The ammo shot well.
There is also Safari Arms. I purchased 2 or 3 boxes of 500 NE from them that shot well. I got a box of 300 Win Mag with 4 different loads . My gun did not like them. The groups ranges from 2.5 inches to almost 6 inches. With certain factory 180's, the gun shoots less than .5 inch groups. I think my gun doesn't like 200 grain bullets.

Could it be John LaSala?
What caliber does he need? I've had lots of oddballs.

For an oddball like you Biebs oddball calibers are normal. Now if you had some 30/06 that would be an oddball.

Ganyanathanks Guys. yes John LaSala is who I was thinking of. Anybody got the Contact details for him and Superior as a back up? I liked Johns ammo and had quite a few clients with superior and it seemed to work well.
8x57 JR...so the .318" bullets rather than the 8x57JRS which uses the modern .323 bullets

Use Enough GunI've had John LaSala load up hundreds of rounds for me in various calibers. Great guy!

376 steyrIs Old Western Scrounger still in business? They were a good place to go for hard to find calibers.

Clan_CollaI have been shooting/hunting S&B .318 8x57J (I) and 8x57 JR with excellent results--
Your Client may not need handloads

luv2safariAt 8X57JR velocities the S&B ammo is just fine. It also regulates well in older guns and must resemble the early ammo's ballistics.
At $20.00/box for the loaded ammo I see little use for high cost custom loads, unless the gun won't shoot the factory ammo well.
I presently shoot the S&B in my Triebel-Ausgburg drilling and my Sauer cape gun with great results.
This is a common price for the ammo here in the USA.

SFRanger7GPMy limited experience with the S&B 8x57 ammo agrees with Clan_Colla and luv2safari. Clara borrowed the PH's old family heirloom in 8x57 with S&B ammo on our recent Namibia trip. She had 3 one shot kills on gemsbok, kudu and waterbuck.
I have used S&B 7x57R ammo in my drilling on several pigs with the same results.

GanyanaThanks Guys!
The 'old' Superior Ammo was great, although some of their loads chrono'd below the stated velocity. I wouldn't buy a bucket of air from the new one. After putting in an order with an agreed upon delivery date the ammo never arrived. When I called to check they were surly and said they were doing inventory. When asked if they could fill the order they just said 'no'. Fortunately the ammo was a back up in case I ran out of components but if I had relied on them I would have been screwed.

www.huntghr.com Gayana great go see you posting again. I used Lonnie at Superior Ammo for the NF cups you recommended I use for my Gibbs .505. Telephone USA 18438303139. I've used him for 30-378 TSX also and worked great on Africa plains game. Received within 2 weeks. Just two weeks ago ordered 10 .577NE in TSX and received in 5 days and shot great. I have no complaints. when is your new book coming out?
