I am building two rifles for a friend.

He got two Sako actions, and I have Dan Lilja barrels.

A 375/404 and a 30/404.

He fell in love with my 30/404, and said “name your price”.

I said “you cannot afford it!”

Everyone laughed, as he has several hotels, and a big yacht!

I did offer to build him his rifles, and make his ammo, free of charge!

The benefit of a long friendship. Smiler

I've had Duane Wiebe build several sets of hunting rifles for Africa and elsewhere. One is a .416 Rigby and .338 Rum; another is a .300 H&H and .375 H&H; and another is a .404 Jeffery and .500 Jeffery. They all shoot great and I'm proud to hunt with them.

If this Covid thing ever calms down, I'm heading to Tanzania with my .404J M98 and either my 338-'06 or my 7mm Rem Mag. Or maybe my 7 X57?

Apparently I have plenty of time to decide.

I have taken the exact trip posed in the original question on multiple occasions.
Easy choice for me , My FN Commercial Mausers in .404 Jeffrey and 9.3x62mm that I settled on years ago.

I hope the World straightens out enough to at least let me try to go one more time.

Tough choice, a lot of good pairs reside in the safes now, would have to decide how [ranges] to pursue these animals:

Modern:
Scoped M-70's in 300 and 400 H&H magnums, 220gr Partitions and 400gr Swift A Frame/BBW #13 solid.

Old school double rifle hunt:
303 British and 577 Nitro, 215gr Woodleigh Weldcores and 750gr TSX/Banded Solid.

'Real' old school:
44-77 and 50-90 Sharps, 475gr and 750gr paper patch and cast lead flat nosed bullets made from 12 to 1 alloy, black powder would do the heavy lifting.

Amen to that!!!

The Covid 19 pandemic is being held hostage to many agendas.

I am planning a return trip in August 2021 and have been thinking hard about leaving the scopes at home. I am primarily planning to hunt buffalo; do it the old fashioned way - up close with open sights.

I have a Chapuis .375 flanged Magnum with open sights and a new Model 70 .416 Rem that I am putting a Skinner ghost ring on.
