Hippo kills fishmonger

A FISHMONGER was last week attacked and killed by a hippopotamus after his canoe capsized during a fishing expedition on the Zambezi River in Nyaminyami District.
The incident, the first in many years, has left residents of Musamba Fishing Camp shell-shocked.
Police confirmed the death of Nilon Chamboko, saying his body has since been retrieved from the water and handed over to relatives for burial.
“We retrieved the body a day later and the relatives were informed and they took the body for burial in Chief Mola’s area,’’ a police officer told The Sunday Mail.
Relating the horrific incident, one of the fishmongers, Mr Isaac Sithole, said the tragedy was the first in many years.
“We are equally in a state of shock up to now as nothing of this sort has ever happened in all my 10 years of working here,’’ said Mr Sithole. The fishing camp, situated near the giant Zambezi River, was set up more than 15 years ago by fishmongers from different parts of the country.
The fishmongers, comprising 56 permit holders, said officials from the National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority were now tracking down the hippo believed to be in one of the ponds.
Gunshots could be heard as the officers fired at the huge mammal, which constantly surfaces and then submerges itself in the water.

It would cease surfacing and submerging itself if someone hit it.
