Naming Your Rifle
My Ruger RSM 416 Rigby is ready to come home from Ruger, and is being sent from the factory to Jim Brockman for bedding etc. Then she'll come home. When she does, I'll name her. With the translation help of Phil Lozano (we think this is right), she will be know by her Swahili name of "Akarabu la Kufa", or in English, "The hand of death".

Does that mean that your ammo will be annointed as "kidoles la akarabu la kufa"?? (fingers of the hand of death) wave

Boats and guitars frequently get feminine names. Probably just as appropriate, and for the same reasons, rifles, which Jeff Cooper calls the Queen of Firearms, should get female names as well. The Werhmacht had their Big Bertha after all. I think I may call my .416 Rigby "Little Lolo" in honor of my wife.

I haven't named any rifles yet. Except for horses, I've tried hard not to name things I might sell later on down the road........

I think I'll name my 375H&H Kubwa Zubu, and my 30-06 Katiti Zubu. Cool

Actually, I don't see any reason for naming my rifles. Seems kind of silly to me.

Hey SBT- why don't you name it (oh sorry, her) "Putz" which is Swahili for Meathead.

Someonce once told me that your relationship with your rifle was as close or closer than your "best girl". Why wouldn't you have a nickname for such a close companion?

My .58 flintlock is "LaDouma"--Thunder in Benda, and it's mate is to be named "Lightning"

I have an old Sako 222 Mag. named American Express (never leave home without it!) and an old Rem 721 in 30/06 called Rolling Thunder.
Both have taken many, many animals.

Well, I call my CZ550 "my CZ", my sako: "my Sako" ect...they all have second names too, like ".308" or "9.3" if theres any confusion likely to arise! Wink

Always seemed strange to me when people give rifles (or trucks) pet names...hell they don't come when called, do they? Roll Eyes

Your Viking ancestors named their swords. Some races believe the souls of the warriors who previously used the swords reside in its steel. The Japanese for example, which is one reason Japanese collectors travel the world trying to buy up the samurai swords souveneired during WW2.

My .450 is named "Zabardast" which in Urdu means "awesome". It is an Indian gentleman.

My .375 is named for good reason "Stormbringer" as Stormbringer was a two edged sword physically and in a spirit sense and was thoroughly evil. It was wielded by Ulric, a warrior of Chaos, who fought Chaos.

My 12-bore shotgun is named "Carmecita" because she is a lovely Spanish lady and nice to admire and fondle.

Hopefully. Have some imagination.

No body cares but me, but I do think ya'll get a bit carried away with romanticizing the whole thing.

I'm done being an old poop now.

I have only named 2 of mine, both target rifles. My Anscheutz 1913 is named "Swet Pea" and my high power across the course rifle is called "Baby".

On a funny side note I have a friend who has a pair of black lab brothers that he named "Damnit" and "U2". Because the first words out of his mouth when he walked in the house was always "get off the couch damn it, and you too" So their registered names were forgoten and their new titles stuck.

My .300 winmag is named "Fenris", and I have an custom forged sword named (as best I can write it from Chinese) "Liyeeng Lhauo Zshyen" ... which means "guide, or pathfinder".

but that's a hard one to write because the Chinese phonetics go up and down in tone as well as just phonetically.

Some I name, some I don't, those I named follow. ----- I have a Winchester custom shop .358 STA named "Big Red" because of it's beautiful red walnut stock. Also .416 Model 70 Winchester named "Jim Owens" for a deceased hunting buddy that was the toughest, and best man I ever knew. Another is .416 Rigby number 1 Ruger named "Mbogo". Also another custom .358 STA called "Lilja" after the barrel, and a .270 WSM called "pretty britchs" after a new grandaughter, who will inherit the rifle at my demise. A .338 Lapua is called the "big dick" after it's case. A .340 Weatherby is call "The Burn" after the Farewell Burn in Alaska where I killed a huge Moose with it. A .300 Win mag is called "Winny". A 30-30 Marlin 336 is called "Trouble" because that is what it got me into as a newly married, extremely cash poor hunter who didn't haave the money for groceries the week I spent all my paycheck on it. A 7mm STW is called "Laredo" after the model Winchester called it. Many others have no names but are not less cherished. wave Good shooting.

My tracker named my two most used rifles Tooma & Wa- Karaka which means thunder & lightning respectivly.

When I bought my last boat my (then) wife suggested I named it after her.....so I called it "Moody Cow" roflmao .....perhaps that's why she became my ex wife! roflmao

I've only ever named one truck and that's my fully restored classic jeep Wagoneer which I call Jessica after the Jeep in Ruark's books....

My original Mauser which has been an on-going two year long learning experience I have dubbed "The Money Pit."

I simply address my S&W Model 19 as "Sir."

I haven't pondered any names for the other 15 firearms I own. I couldn't keep up with all of them anyway...

I've really only named my .30-06, which was my 1st big game rifle, and still the one I go to today when things get serious. It's a factory Remington 700 BDL SS and I call it "Crazy Julio." Ok, I named it when I was like 13, so that's why it got the weird name. There will be no changing it, either... Razzer

None of my rifles had names, but if I ever own a 505 Gibbs I'm calling it "Wilson" after the PH in Hemingway's "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" ...and also because of the volleyball Tom Hanks names Wilson in "Cast Away."
