Bill/OregonHe'll be in our Sportsman's Warehouse Jan. 11, and I am curious to meet him and see if he is "a regular fellow" or a self-aggrandizing marketing machine.

I talked to Jim for hours at the airport in France. Jim's just like you see him on TV. What I liked about Jim is hes tough and a true hunter.

KenscoShockey needs a public relations guru worse than anyone I know, because the way he projects himself is that he is "a self-aggrandizing marketing machine".

aggrandizing
I think we all hate the ads on all the hunting shows, And there is no question Jim is a smart promoter and he knows how make a buck. You could even call him a marketing machine, after all everybody on TV is "Selling " you something.
But I tell you after talking to him in person for hours I would never call him self-aggrandizing (The act or practice of enhancing or exaggerating one's own importance) Nothing could be further from the truth, In person Jim came across as a humble, modest down to earth person. Jim freely talked about his TV show, his guiding business and some of mistakes he has made.
I wish there were more people like him in the hunting industry.

Bill/OregonRobert: Thanks for your comments. I look forward to meeting him. I understand he was a hell of a swimmer and would have gone to the Moscow Olympics for Canada had it not been for the boycott.

Frank MartinezI met him and spent time with him in Sacramento at the ISE convention and felt him to be a really avid hunter who is taking advantage of the opportunity to hunt all over the world. He had just returned from Africa and was very excited about hunting there again. His Africa DVD is worth the money. I enjoyed his company and felt he was genuine in every respect.

Larry SellersKensco - I thought this was about Shockey's hunt to Cameroon? Some of you "green with envy" people just can't help slamming people you obviously have no personal knowledge about. Seems JS is doing just fine with his public relations. Give it a rest!!

Bill CShockey comes across to me as a fun-loving, regular guy who enjoys what he is doing, and is making money at doing it. The shows with his father, site seeing with his wife, the crazy hair and childish yet refreshing reactions...if he's acting he's the best dang actor on TV!
He could hunt with me any day!

Robert johnsonOne think that totally impressed me with Jim was he has hunted with some of the best outfitters in the premium areas of the world. With all his big game hunting experience he wanted to do a true portage safari. No trucks, premium areas, 4 star lodges, fine wine, Jim likes adventure! I think Jim enjoys the experience of the hunt and being with the trackers more that the kill. Like I said earlier. I wish more of the other TV hunting personalties held some of his values!
If someone could make me a copy of his Cameroon show (Next Sunday) I love to have a copy. I hunted with the same crew of trackers.

BrettAKSCIRobert,
That's great to hear that Jim is a regular guy. I am not a jelous person at all, but i like to know that successful people that I admire are nice people. If I were him I'd market the hell out of myself. All that money buys a lot of hunts! I just hope I can find a way to hunt abroad as much as he does!

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

talentrecI just saw the Cameroon episode tonight. It looked like a tough hunt and was a nice departure from the normal hunting shows on TV. I've never met Jim, but out of all of the hunting shows, I think I look foward to his the most. It seems like he hunts hard and has a lot of fun doing it.

CA Safari HunterI met Jim Shockey at the Sacramento Sportsman’s Expo show (4 or 5 years ago). He was running his guiding booth (all by himself). I recognized him because I just got satellite and started watching all the hunting shows. I liked his show because I just bought my first muzzleloader.
He was all by himself with no one talking to him. I was asking my brother if it was really him. He said no, because no one was talking to him. I went over to his booth and started to talk to him. He autographed my book (that I bought) and was very friendly and helpful with some muzzleloading tips. I spent about 15-20 min talking to him. One of the nicest “celebrities” I have ever met.
Now I see him at shows and I feel bad for him. He always has at least +30 people following him and hounding him. People just stop and stare.

Die Ou JagterWatched the Cameroon show (taped) last evening. I saved it (I don't save many) man it was tough and showed his misses. It looked liked a tough hunt and he earned his Duikers. I love those little guys, as I remember he said they were tougher than the big guys.

LionHunterWhen JS and I spoke at SCI last year, he had just recently returned from the Camaroon hunt. He was really excited about it and said something to the effect of it being the best hunt he'd ever done. He used Cam Greig to help arrange the Chase Libre hunt. Cam was born and raised in Camaroon by missionary parents. He now resides in the SF bay area and has been a SCI SFBA Chapter member for many years. Many of our chapter members have used Cam to make the arrangements of this hunt for them. It is a very difficult hunt and everyone who does it ends up with some amazing stories. I watched the show last night after having taped it earlier.

Shockey shot a Leopard with the same PH I hunted with in Namibia. The PH said Jim was a good guy. That's good enough for me.
I'd love to do that Cameroon hunt but may be a bit old for it.

AntlersI just saw the episode today and thought it was great. I got a laugh out of the pigmy guide giggling at Shockey's miss on a deiker - by the way, there is no way I would have made that shot either!

Robert johnsonJust saw the show, it was great. Unless you been on one of these hunts it's hard to understand what it really like to hunt with out all the modern day conveniences. This type of hunt is only for the person looking for adventure! If you go on one of these hunt you remember three things. Heat, Humidly and Biting Bugs!
Jim's got the best outdoor shows on TV. Great close up footage of true hunting!

Gun Control - A theory espoused by some monumentally stupid people; who claim to believe, against all logic and common sense, that a violent predator who ignores the laws prohibiting them from robbing, raping, kidnapping, torturing and killing their fellow human beings will obey a law telling them that they cannot own a gun.
03 January 2009, 12:10
LionHunterYes, his show is on the Outdoor Channel.
Hunting Forest Duiker is just as difficult and just as fast as shown on the show. A shotgun is the trick. Lots of guys doing this hunt buy a cheap single shot and saw the barrel off to 18" (legal U.S. requirement). It is very wet and everything rusts. Heavy rifles are used for big game in the forest and shots will be close and the bullet may have to plow through foliage.

I'll second that. He's one of my favorite hunting people to watch on tv. I enjoy it b/c of his obvious love of the adventure and he can laugh at himself as well. Then you learn a little about their history (like his Olympic's aspirations or Boddington's military service) and it makes me respect them even more.
And Bill, I even enjoy reading your exploits. You do such an outstanding job of putting together information about your adventures that I've noticed others start to follow your example. Congrats on your past achievements.

camshaftI was vey pleased by Jim's attitude towards the forest hunt. The hunt is hard, but one of the real “true hunts” left in the world today where most of the time the PH does all the heavy lifting and the client just pulls the trigger. He really wanted a forest buffalo, and we tried, but he picked a bad year and the rains kept the grasses too high.
Jim asked for nothing special and was treated like all of our clients. He hunted hard and had some success. He has re-booked to try to get the buffalo next time.
I will say from all of my experiences with him and those of some other PH’s I know that guided him Jim is just a great guy, and “one of us” who truly enjoys hunting and being out of doors.

Adrian ParhamLion Hunter, I read somewhere that ATF considers a shotgun barrel to begin at the end of the chamber and not at the standing breech. I really don't know this for a fact but sure would like to know the truth of the matter. This is supposedly why Randy Wheeler was being arrested at Ruby Ridge ?? fwiw
04 January 2009, 19:29
Adrian ParhamOh, BTW Jim is a really cool guy. I have also spoken with Cam about this hunt and would love to do it. There is the possibility one might learn more about themselves than they really want to know in such an environment. Jim is younger and probably tougher than I as well.

MARK H. YOUNGI watched the show last night. For a guy wanting these ultra tough and unique experiences it looks like the cat's meow and they have my respect. For me I'll take the AC, fresh clothing and French cuisine everytime.
